In a letter received by the News this week, from Sylvester Lawrence of Springwater. then a t Charlotte, N. C.. he modestly accounts for*his new title of Lieu tenant of the Machine Gun Com pany of the 162nd U. S. Infantry, having been one of fourteen men, of a class of twelve hundred, to successfully pass the required examination. The letter contained an inter esting description of the army life and camp activities, explain ing the methods pursued in com bating the (Mtisonous gases now used in modern warfare. Sylvester advises the importa tion of Southern negro labor into the Oregon fields, for he says “ thev will work for six bits a day.” In closing, he wished to he re membered to all friends at horn« and said it was probable that by the time the letter arrived, he would be crossing the "big cretik" enroute to France. our account system. \ to all. This might better be headed, "Attention Have Hoffmeister, Kov Alspaugh and Constable Ed Bates.” But anyway. Rev. Hen ry Spiess, pastor of the Estacada M. E. Church, hereby wishes to duly give notice that sometime this week he contemplates mak ing a trip behind his faithful steed, and possibly during the early morning hours, with a car go of domesticated rabbits, en route from his farm back to the urban environments of his Esta cada home. He trusts that this return trip will not be marred by any intru sion from officers and posses, sus pecting his cargo as being stolen poultry, as occured during his outward trip with his’ bunnies.
