PnRo Two THE EUGENE QUAED The new magnificent organ Just In stalled at the Lowell theater sounded forth yesterday under the master touch of Itcnatdo 1 Intent. Lowell or- . irrintHt. ami nil who heard it. punned then stopped to listen. Mighty torn like the mi rue of an angry surf rre nut, then sweet tr:ifti, delicate an a port note on a violin were barely nii'lihlf . The work of Mnnley Corkeroft is flnne. He hau installed the great Wiirlitser Hone-Jones unit orchentrn, has nut it in tun ready to play. Now Mr. Ungot, one of the noted organist of the Coast, will take charge, and wilt thrill the crowd nightly with it mimic. In Perfoct Condition "It Is in prefect condition," enthu slasticnlly declares the orgmtHt. "It la wonderful to touch, It rctiponne in no delicate, so quirk. It it an Itmtru inent that a munition wiM grow to love more and more every day. I am it lad indeed that 1 have the opportun it y of being the firt to play upon it." Kneeiiil concert numbers will be or- fered on the organ from time to time, and it in perfert for prologue ureorri tiariiment, it is declared. The acoustics of the great auditorium are perfert, and every note, no matter how dHI rate, is curried buck to the furthest recess, to the very lop of the balcony. "It Is a rare pleasure to piuv wticn yon know everyone within hearing distance will get the effect of every note," way Mr. Itaggot. Special Selections Roady ' A specially selected Hut of selec tions will be offered wilh "Madame Ran fJene." Gloria Hwansnn'a star ring vehicle, which will be the opening picture at the Lowell. This new organ la a marvel, mtisl rally and mechanically. Ho great In the variety of its instrumentation, the organist who playa It can provide a symphony of music a 75-nieee orches tra could not reproduce. Thounsands of pipes, some smaller than a lead pencil, others so large two men could hardly lift one, are closely assembled In two aound -proof chambers, the organ chamber wall Is enclosed by adjustable shutters, controlled by foot pedals at the base or the console, visible directly In front of the orches tra nit. At the com m mid of the or ganist, the volume of the many pipes la softened Into a mere whisper, or swelled Into n mighty chorus or burst ing Btnriu. Three Manuals On the console are three manuels, each a complete keyboard, making possible a rapid change of instrumen tation. Though it may not seem hu manly possible, the organist will piny on all three manuela, or keyboards, t the same time, and in addition will he playing a base accompaniment with bis feet. The installation tif flits big new XVnrlltser has been a tremendous un dertaking. Two skilled assistnntN hnvo been tolling day and night under the direction of Mr. Cnekcroft for the past three weeks. Fifty hugtt crates, compactly filled with delicate pipes and the numerous electrical nnd me chnnlcnl effects of the organ miule tip the carloads of precious freight consigned to the Lowell, from the WurllUer factory, where the Instru ment was especially designed nnd built for the new theater. Instruments Numerous The instruments contained within this great organ include: Three vio lins of different tonal qualities, 'cello a tut bass viol of the string family, two flutes, piccolo and tibia of the wood winds, tuba profunda, ophlceido, har monic tuba, kruiuett, oboe, ami vox humana of the reed Instruments, din phono, bourdon, diapason, clarion and trumpet. The traps and effects in clude: Marlmbaphone, orchestral bells, mandolin, cathedral chimes, sleigh hells, snare drum, bass drum, kettle drum, crash cymbal, Chinese gong, torn torn, Chinese wood block, tam bourine, Castanet, triangle, firo gnng, nuto horn, door bell, surf effect, bird whistles, steamboat and train whittle, train effect, storm effect, horse hoof effect, and numerous combinations obtaining everything from a baby cry to an airplane bombardment. Two beautiful features of this new Wurlttser are the harp, an instru ment that is In itself the 'no ul of musical beauty, and a piano. The piano, as with all instrument of the huge nig.ct, is played from the organ console, not the piano Ii.m hoard. It Is no eneffect or "electric" piano, but a genuine inntrumrnt, the keys nf which are electrically connected wilh those of the organ coiihoIc. Nor is the piano action or cxpremion iuiK Ing. So marvelous is the inprluimm perfected that the organist hue the ame "touch" control from the con sole as he would at the piano key board. It mining his fingers lightly over the organ keys, with the piano "on" and the soft tingle of the in strument of the immortals is produc ed; strike the keys quickly aud the piano resounds with a staccato, sharp and clear; strike the keys forcibly an 1 tho majesty of the forte rings forth. Jly combination buttons, the oiunniM can produce the play ing of one, tw t, or three musicians or even a "pinu band." Ily depressing an attachment on the expression pedal, a cord struck un the piano can In held, leaving the ofgunist hand free to piny a pint age, or run on the other kei boards of the organ. T New Market Opens In Lowell Building Home seventeen years ago Stein Hrothers started to lay concrete side walks, and five years later they came to Kugene. They did their work well, nnd as a consequeuce, their bushicfa grew. They studied every angle of the building game, and then begun to enter other branches than paving and walks. Today they offlcally declared the new Lowell theater building com pleted, nt a cost of about SL!t5,000. It is a building to be proud of, declare the owners, and due credit is given the contractors for its erection. AVork was begun on the structure Inst Bepteinber, about seven months ago. Since then n crew averaging from JtU to 00 men have been work ing every1 day, and the building has progressed at u unusual rale of speed. Tho structure Is flo by IflO feet In Kino, and mto story high. It is con structed bo that other stories may bo added as needed. Iteinnrced con crete, which makes the building fire proof was used throughout. Over -",000 yards of concrete were poured during count ruction. It la no of the staunchent nnd stoutest struc tures in the city. The outside la stucen, which makes not only a durable, but a beautiful finish. The aestnesa vies wilh the efficiency with which It was planned, and is declared to be one of the city's finest buildings, in appearance and In construction. Stlen Hrothera also hare several other notable buildings to their credit. The New Iaraway building, the Os borne apartments, four fraternitv houses, the Craftsmen club, have ail been completed, while the new Theater building on Alder and Kleventh street is under construction, as Is a home for tienrge II. MMor ran on Knirmomit heights, ami th new public market. A great deal of paving is also being done by the firm. In point of equipment the new Lowell theater, which is opening to Kugene theater goers tonight, is com plete in every detail. The seats? Ah, real comfort is assured, for every one of the IKK) seats is a Heywood j Wakefield chair, with a soft, springy jseet, upholstered with genuine Span' , ifth grain leather. They are so ar-j ! ranged that a full view of the stag-; is accorded every person without a bit of cronning or leaning. j The floors too have been given 1 every attention. Soft carpets that: deaden all sound are on every floor. These are carefully harmonized by the general decorating scheme, and were especially designed and made fr the Lowell theater. The floor Is in clined at just the right scientific an gle so that the stage and screen is in full view, yet it is no effort to walk to any part of the house. Access to the upstairs is by two ramps or in clines, which go up eiltfer side of the j foyer. These are also heavily car- peted. Seats in the balcony afford! the same view as those down stairs,; and aro just as soft and cnnirortauie The openings are beautifully draped with heavy velvet, in shades to ma ten the surroundings. This is carried out on the stage, where the grand drape is of burnt orange silk plush, es pecially dyed for all color effects. Tho stage itself ia one of the fin est equipped on the Coast, and i capable of handling any size road show or vaudeville attraction. It bos a full set of 42 lines, motor operated curtains, high loft, and a switchboard for light control that is a marvel. The very latest type screen, the "Haven" which reproduces pictures perfectly, is ready for the feature pictures. The operating booth, fully equipped with two big moving picture machines, a atercoptiean for slides and an nr roy of spotlights, Is large and abso lutely fireproof. The entire building, constructed of reinforced concrete, gives a feeling of solidarity and satisfaction. It is fireproof throughout, and the massive strength of the structure mokes the balcony as safe as the lower floor. The equipment Is in perfect keep ing with the spirit and construction of the new theater, and the whole makes one of the finest theatrical places on the coast, It is declared. i t. i dr&ye, sat at the dais table with her, and a score of screen stars, directors and Famous Flayers executives. This latter distinction was bestowed upon Miss Swanson by the French Government for her remarkable impersonation of "Madame Sans-Gene."
