Southern Italy was visited by a serious and fatal earthquake this morning. The centre of the disturbance was Sicily and the greatest loss of life and property is on that isl and, where houses in many towns collapsed. The greatest re ports of loss come from Calabria, where three dead and sixty wounded have been removed from the ruins at St. Efanooni. Soldiers have been called on to carry on the work of sucoor. Sixty are said to have sustained injuries at Sannofrio, and the entire population is camping in the opon air. Troops every where are engaged in tho work of rescue. King Emmanuel will go to Calabria should circumstances warrant the journey. A tidal wave swopt into this port today as a result of the earthquake. The approach of the wa ter was seen and a warning rang out. People fled from tho docks and the water front of the town. The waters left confusion and damage everywhere, but it is not known how many lives were lost. VESSELS WERE DAMAGED London, Deo. 28. A dispatch from Catania, Sicily, says the Swedish Steamer Asta, the Austrian steamer Budamato, and the Italian steamer Orseolo, were damaged today by an oarthquake and the consequent tidal disturbance at that port. The extent of the injuries to tho vessels is not given. ' RECORDED AT WASHINGTON Washington, Dec. 28. An earthquake of moderate force and prolonged duration was recorded by tho woathor bureau last i night. Professor Marvin estimated it to bo 4800 miles away, corresponding quito closely to tho distance between Washington : and Calabria.
