The Guard pre dicted the growth tha,t would come to K,.na with the laying or permanent pavement, anlt the expectations of two years ago have more than been fulfilled. Now this paper Is willing to go on record by asserting that a gravity water system, fed by mount m streams, will benefit the city even more than the ipaving of the streets, and the wisdom of the in vestment will generally be admitted when. water from Richey Creek is flowing from every faucet Jn Eu gene. A news Item says Nick Longworth "has been drafted for work on the stump." If anybody drafted Nick for such a purpose, it was probably his wife, not the spellbinders com mittee. His son-in-law position made it dangerous to turn down his offer to make near-speeches. It must have been a great strain on Mr. Hearst to say that he be lieved his party would "speedily be placed in power by "unbought and unbossed voters" without laughing right out loud. Nothing more hu morous has been said in the pres ent campaign. Again the Question of whether leprosy Is contagious Is being dis cussed. We do not pretend to know, but we haven't heard that any of those who say It isn't have offered to prove It by living with lepers for evea a little while. ' Bugene'a -fame as the city oseuti fnl is spreading all over tha coun try. Its splendid streets and beauti ful homes are the delight of visitors, while the new business blocks im press all with its growing commer cial importance. And now they are even dragging riJor, dead Clover Cleveland Into the presidential campaign. A let ter, alleged to have been written by him just before his death, assailing Mr. Bryan, Is now being published In the papers. Governor . Folk gave a practieal demonstration of his leotura on "The era of conscience," by returning $100 paid him by mistake by the treasurer of an Indiana Chautauqua, without waiting to be asked for it.
