The presi dential campangn waa a secondary conlileratlon with the politicians of Greater New York today. The atten tion of everyone, from the district leader to the ordinary voter, waa en KroHied In the asaetnbly dlatrict prl- marles. Results of (treat Importance are expected from the primaries. In fact, the future of some of the party leaders Is at stake. The republican primaries are ex pected to Indicate to a certain ex tent the alrenirth of Governor Hiivhee In his fight for renomlnatlon at the Saratoga convention next week. Herbert Paraona and some of his HentenantB have arranifed a test vote on the governor In several of tke dis tricts. Separate tickets have been pnt up In these districts, and en rolled republicans Invited to express their preference for or aa;alnat the renomlnatlon of the governor. The repnbllran situation an af fected by the primaries Is Interest ing, bnt so far as the general public Is concerned It Is entirely oversha dowed by the laanes at stake In the demoeratlo primaries at the other end of the Drooklyn brlsire. The lnng-standlns; fight between "noss" Mtirnhy of Tammany Hall and Sena tor Patrick McCarren, the democrat ic leader In Drooklyn, for the control of the democracy of Kings county rnscnes Its climax In the nrlmarles todnv. It Is a fight, and a fight to a finish, for the victor will b the un disputed lender In Brooklyn for a long time to come. Kver since Murphy came Into power he has nursed an ambition to make the democracy of Klnrs county i a tall to his Tammany Hall kite.! With Hrnoklyn added to his domain he felt that Tammany Hall could pretty near dictating to the demo cratic party of New York state and would likewise bn a most Influential factor In the control of the party thronehnnt the nation. At the time that Unrphy conceived this plan the situation in Kings county appeared on the surface to he hiffhly favorable to a realization of his ambitions. Rome of the leaders who had been most powerful in too control of the democratic praty In Brooklyn had died. The Influence of others had neon seriously undermined. To the conxiimale politician of tho Murphy calibre It looked to he rnthor an easy matter to gnln control. Hut lust when the Tiger's hordes were rendy to cross tho bridge "Hor atlus" Patrick McCarren appeared to repel the leprous Invanlon. McCar ren had been more or less active In Brooklyn politics for airno years, gradually working ap to .the top without getting In the limelight any more than he could help. Ills friends described him as a "slick" politician. Murphy found him to bo not only a, ,,sllrk" politician but a hard tight re as well. Kvery move of Tammany to gain control In Brooklyn haa been fought by McCarren tooth and nail. In the primaries. In the conventions and In tho courts ha has carried on the fight in a manner that has won admiration even from those who were not In sympathy with him. It Is believed that today'a primaries will prove the turning-point of the bnt tl.e Senator McCarren predicts that he will sweep everything before him in the primaries. "I'll win In the ond," he says, "or tear the house down." "Boss" Murphy, following his rule, is nwaltlng tho result In silence. Investigating committee Is being cir culated freely by the faction oppos ing Lllley and he is being charged with having brought his accusations in order to make political capital as a reformer. I'AHTV f.XNVEX7F"-.V3 IN OLD MISSOl'IU Jefferson City, Mo., Sept. 8. No city In Missouri, except on the occa sion of a national convention, ever entertained bo many politicians at one time as fell to the lot of Jefferson City today. And on no previous occa sion In the history of the state waa there ever held a gathering that rep resented five separate and distinct political parties. The meeting of the various parties at the same time Is doe to the pro visions of the state primary law, which went Into effect the first of the month. The law provides that all of the parties having state tlck ete In the field must hold conventions on the same date and at the same place to ratify the results of the pri mary, organize the state committees and prepare platforms. These plat forms must be promulgated within 14 hours after the tnietlng of the conventions. The conventions In session here today represent the Democratic, Re publican, Prohibitionist, Socialist and Independence parties. Chief Interest naturally centres in the meetings of the Democrata and Republicans. These two conventions have atracted many delegates and visitors, while the meetings of the three minor par ties are comparatively small. Aside from the selection of chair men of the state committees the busi ness of the several conventions Is purely of a routine character. In dications point to the re-election of Harry M. Rubey and W. S. Dickey, the present heads of the Democratic and republican state committees, respectively. l'mocrnts of Montana Anaconda, Mont., Sept. 8. The Democratic state convention met in Aaaconda today and was called to or der by D. G. Browne, of Fort Benton, shatrman of the atate executive com mittee. The convention will adopt a platform and name candidates for the state offices to be filled nt the No vember election. CoiiKTcwn-nnn to Be Tried Fremont, O., Sept. 8. The case of. Congressman J. F. I.anlng, under In dictment charging him with embex slement and larceny, was called for trial here today, having been brought here on a change of venue from Nor wnlk. The charges against Represen tative leaning grow out of the failure of the Ohio Trust Company, of which he was vice president.
