One of the most interesting and exciting politi cal campaigns Illinois has seen in years and the first to be held under the primary system is rapidly nearing a finish. The end will come next Saturday, when the voters of all par ties will express their preference for the nominations for all State officers from governor down, for members of Congress, for county officials and for members of the legislature which will have the choosing of a United States senator to succeed Albert J. Hopkins. The fight is Interesting on both the Republican and the Democratic sides. On the Republican side ex-Governor Richard aYtes Is fighting bitterly to wrest the gubernatorial nomination from Governor Deneen, who is a can didate for renomination, and ex-Senator William E. Mason in the same manner wants to capture the seat of United States Senator Hopkins, who neither desires nor expects to relin quish the toga for six years to come. A third aspirant for the seat of Senator Hopkins Is Congressman George E. Foss of this city. He did not enter the race utll after the oth ers had seemed a good start, but his campaign has been of a whirlwind variety that has forced both Senator Hopkins and ex-Senator Mason to put on full speed.
