The letter, telling of a massa cre which took place on July 24, was received by friends of A. D. McPhee, superintendent of the Promontorlo mine, which is located about 20 miles from Montezuma, Sonora. Without warning a band of Yaquis swept down upon the Lamnazas and slaughtered thirteen members of three families. The other persons at the mines saved their lives by fleeing to the Promotorlo. An alarm was sent to the ranchers throughout the country, who have also taken refuge at the mine, and at the time the letter was sent was aiding In preparations to resist any attack. He noted, the wretched condition of the highway, and at once took steps to bring the matter before the people so that it could he properly presented to th court. Petitions were circulated throughout the county and hundreds of signatures were secured. The court took the matter under consideration, and will probably take no definite action for sonic little time.
