QCICK WORK IN iii:rouTixi roxvKXTiox The republican nation convention re-convened in Chicago at 10 o'clock tnis morning. At 9:30 a. nt. The Guard posted a bulletin announcing thi nomination of Sherman, of New Tork, for vice-president on the first ballot. At 9:45 another bulletin was posted giving the detailed vote. At 1:50 another bulletin announced that tin convention had (Adjourned sine ale. That was quick work ex- ftlloed, of course, by the difference between eastern and western time. And It should not be out of place It mention the fact that the Guard jMterday had the 'largest telegraphic tews report ever used by a Eugene piper, and probably by any paper In the state, outside of Portland. We tra willing to have our daily con tention reports of this week com ptred with those of papers in cities much larger than Eugene, confident that the comparison will redound to the credit of The Guard. The people of Eugene have received their news from Chicago just as quickly and ilmost as fully as the residents of titles of the Portland class. We call ittentlon to this matter because the people of a community tco often I Ktept newspaper enterprise as a I matter of course, falling to properly tppreclate the labor and expense that II entails upon the publishers. While Eugene is boasting of many o'.ker things, the fact that it has the best newspapers of any town of its tiie in the Northwest should not bp oterlooked. The water supply of the universe seems Just now cornered by the rivers of Missouri and Kansas. Somebody, commenting on the noiseless firearm invented by Maxim, declares that what the country realty needs at this time is a noiseless fire cracker. Perhaps Mr. Maxim will come forward and relieve a much dis tressed country. There is very little pertinent com ment for the newspapers to make concerning the nomination of Mr. Taft. The Importance of the event was discounted by the absolute as surance that it would happen. Wo should llko to know -just what J. Bourne, Jr., said when the T..ft vote passed the fateful 4!t siage. But we don't want this taken to mean that we should feel it appropriate to print his remarks. The ladies of the Conim.rclal Club want cherries and roses fur the Port land visitors next Tuesday. We have enough of both to fill the club room; so don't- forget the date.
