HOWELL AXI) .MORMON EL DERS THINK IT WORK OF PER SONS . OPPOSED TO THEIR FAITH WHO WANT TO GET HID OK THEM POLICE THINK IX- TISVK'SD TO ONLV- FRIGHTEN THEM ' The residence of Mrs. E. E. How ell, at 115 Washington street, corner of West First, was damaged by an explosion of dynamite or giant pow- derder this morning at l:4U o clock A charge had been placed under the front porch, and the explosion demol ished the porch, broke out all the window panes In the front part of the building, and qhterwise damaged '.he house. None of the occupants of the residence were injured. Besides Mrs. Howell and her three children, her brother, W. S. Buchan in, and his five children, and two Mormon elders, U. h. uuntora ana u. t , Williams. Hved there. Mrs. How- til Is also , a Mormon,-and it is be ieved by her and the other occu pants of the house that religious fan atics opposed to the Mormon faith placed the charge under the porch In an endeavor to kill them. The po lice officers, however, are Inclined to the belief that the explosion was' In tended simply to frighten them, or It would Tiave been placed further beneath the house. The hole made In the ground by the explosive Indl ?ated that It was placed at the outer edge of the porch. i The explosion was heard In all oarts of the city, and some who were twakened by it thought it might have been an early morning blast at the -ock qn'rrv of thp paving comnajiy Those living nearby, though, knew that It. Hid not come from the quar ry and some made an investigation. Quite a crowd was soon on the Bcene. The police officers were at once no tified, and an Investigation was start d, but absolutely no clue to the mis creant could then or can now be found. Buchanan and some of his children were sleeping in a tent In the base ment at the house, nt the time of the explosion. A rock from .the founda tion was hurled through the tent and It struck the iron bedstead directly over Buchanan's head. Had it gone between the rods of the head of the bed It might have killed him. Elder Willams was sick -in bed at tho time, having become worn -out. by overwork, and the shock of the exnlo- slon and the excitement made him worse,, biit he is . getting along well today. ione ot tne others who were In the house at the time were affect ed by the shock except Mrs. H-ow?ll, whose nerves were pretty badly shak en. Mrs. Howell came to Eugene from Monmouth about three ypnrs ago and has resided here Bince. She original ly came from Salt Lake City, and has always been a Mormon. She Is a widow. Elders Williams and Dun ford have been In Eugene for the past several months, and have, been holding street meetings every Satur day night since coming here. They have been working all through the county in the interests of their church. Mrs. . Howell has been boarding them and her brother and his children. The family has a good renutation and the only thing that any one could hold against them as far as can be learned Is their religion. GASOLINE WOOD SAW W G.
