' The residence of Mrs. E. E. How

of West First, was damaged by an
explosion of dynamite or giant pow-

A charge had been placed under the
front porch, and the explosion demol
ished the porch, broke out all the
window panes In the front part of
the building, and qhterwise damaged

the residence were injured.

ieved by her and the other occu
pants of the house that religious fan

lice officers, however, are Inclined to
the belief that the explosion was' In
tended simply to frighten them, or
It would Tiave been placed further
beneath the house. The hole made

edge of the porch.
i The explosion was heard In all
oarts of the city, and some who were
twakened by it thought it might have
been an early morning blast at the

Those living nearby, though, knew
that It. Hid not come from the quar

Quite a crowd was soon on the Bcene.
The police officers were at once no
tified, and an Investigation was start
d, but absolutely no clue to the mis
creant could then or can now be
found.
Buchanan and some of his children
were sleeping in a tent In the base
ment at the house, nt the time of the
explosion. A rock from .the founda
tion was hurled through the tent and
It struck the iron bedstead directly
over Buchanan's head. Had it gone
between the rods of the head of the
bed It might have killed him.
