There are many great countries, in civiliza tion and power England, Germany, France, America, Japan and the rest. But there Is only one which, with sire, numbers, civilization and power. combines also the vital quality of unity, remarks a California exchange. W have the most scattered and dl- versified population in the world. yet we are more alike than any -other people In the world. We all speak the same language, wear the same clothss and have the same manners. customs and ideals. ' In Central Eu rope, within a day's walk, you can pass through three different lan guages, civilizations and forms of government. Even In Hussia the spo ken language of the people varies so much every hundred or two miles, that they cannot understand each other. The common native of any part of Russia is practically a foreign er In any other part. And the native of any province of China finds the .spoken language of any oilier part to tally unintelligible. Thtre can be no real national sentiment among such people. They cannot understand each other, neither their '.tucsnases, their thoughts nor their (ntlmeiits. The one mos: remarkable fad about our country is its exact reversal of all these conditions.
