(Medfori Dally Tribune.) Willamette valley counties whr.h voted against tin- ritate L'ni veiOiy appropriation bill can very justly be termed moss back counties. They aiv behind the times, reluctant to accept any new ideas, stumbling blocks in t lie path jof progress. They have lisyn so long in ,hn yui !.,!... not. , lilt and It is hopeless tn try and help' them. Look atJho llHt of counties oppos ed to higher education Clackamas, Marlon, Wushlngt in, Tillamook, Linn. Denton. Lincoln and Yamhill. The bigger the majority against the bill, the bigger th mcssbackism. Marion leads with 2200, Yamhill has 1100, Washington Hue, Clackamas, 1600 and Benton SOU. The region Inhabited by these mossbacks is one of the fairest and richest on earth, the Willamette val ley, and the making of a living Is so easy, that the Inhabitants have but little energy, originality or enter prise. They have let their orchards become so covered with pests that they are unproductive. They are wearing out their rich soil by plant ing the same crops for half a cen tury, annually; they plant hops when they know they can't make ex penses, simply from force of habit; they allow Portland commission men to take all their profits year after year, and haven't enough energy to organize for self-nrotection. What life there is 1b due to newcomers, who are building up the towns, installing power plants, building trolley lines, and making money from the long neglected natural resources that would He forever untouched If left to the mossbacks. No wonder they cannot understand or appreciate higher education. The progressive counties of Ore gon, those who are dolns; things, who are up-to-date, voted for the university appropriation, yet had it not been for Multnomah's 8000 ma jority, the bill would have been snowed under In spite of Lane and Jackson counties and Eastern Ore gon. THIS DEMOCRAT IS HOT. (Jefferson Review.) For Chamberlain to refuse to at tend the democratic state convention because he is non-partisan Is blamed foolishness and rank Ingratitude. If he is not a democrat, he should be. Four different times has the demo cratic party of Oregon sacrificed ev erything else on the ticket Tor Cham berlain. Kx-Senators John H. Mit chell and J. N. Dolph wore "non-partisan," after their election, so far as working for their home people was concerned, and the request cf the humblest democrat receive! the same prompt attention from them as did that of the republican boss, yet they did not go back on the party that el ected them. The Review man has supported Chamberlain for the Legls ture from Linn, for prosecuting at torned for the 3d district, for at torney general, for Governor and for U. S. Senator. We have seen, time and again, the ablest democrats of the state willingly sacrifice them selves In order to help Chamberlain. The man of all others whom we pre fer for U. S. Senator, Hon. J. K. Weatherford of Albany, clean, able with a national acquaintance and powerful- Influence, devoted his time, talent and money. In an utterly hope less race In order to elect Chamber lain on his first run for governor. And now he Is non-partisan. Oh, rot! And just think of It! All these years we've been thinking he was a democrat. CHAMUKIIS HARDWARK CO. i FRUIT P30SPECTS I IN LANE COUNTY ARE SPLENDID The recent warm weather f?as been the needed thing for strawberries and other small fruits In this seclion, while a little rain would be welcomed at any time by the farmer, Indications point to a splendil all-round crop In Lane county. The berries and small fruits are coming along nicely. Cherries are well-formel and the trees in most localities are loaded. The Royal Anns, which are most Impoortant of the cherries in this section, promise an especially good yield, and if prices are as good as last year the growers will make thousands of dollars from the one variety, which grows more perfectly in this section of the Will amette VaJley than any ether place in the world. Later fruits promise, with one possible exception, a big yield. In some sections Italian prunes will yield from a ptiarter to a half crop, owlug to the early frost which did great Injury to this one variety of prunes. In other places the frost did not effect Italians at all. Other prunes, especially the Petites and sil vers, were not injured In any tec tion. Peaches are looking well and a bumper crop of pears and apples seem almost assured. The only thing that Is worrying the fruit-grower is the possibility that prices may not be as good as last year, although there Is no reason to doubt that good prices will prevail. The farmer will have the advantage of securing all the help he wants at a reasonable price this season. Hay and grain look well. It is for these crops that rain would be most welcome. Spring grain is In espec ially good form. Cheat hay will give a banner yield in most parts of Lane county. Vetch will average well, but would be Improved by a little rain. Hops are doing well and more fields are In cultivation that was expected early In the season. Several have been plowed up, however,' and the total output will not be as large as for merly. SWIMMERS SHOULD WEAR RATKING SUITS Naked boys and men have been the habit of going in swiming In the backwater eddy just across the river from Judkins' Point in full view of the railroad, the wagon road, and the mill race over which scores of women pass every day. Probably most of the swimmers wear the costumes de creed by law and cystoma, but many have been observed that have not had a shred of clothing to cover their personc. Many of the culprits appear to be full grown, and not mere children. Others also wear mere breech clouts and can hardly be told from those who are clothed with less. The swimming hole across from Judkins' Point is reached by canoes. usually. The water Is warmer In the backwater, and Eugene's boys and men flock to the attraction In aquads on warm days.
