It was the purpose of the Pottsvillo official to teach by object lesson what happened to homicides nder.the laws of the Keystone itate. There has been a decided tendency iltiln recont years to exclude the public frni executions of criminals and allow the newspapers to supply the necessary details of such affairs. This is probably quite correct in tieory but the Los Angeles Express thinks there is a certain percentage ol the American population of recent Importation and education which tjnnot take advantage of such ex cellent avenues of t publicity, and atanyof these persons need enlighten ment as to American views on (lie too ready use of implements of des truction and the code of ' revenge Tiich prevails in some foreign coun tries. Witnessing a hanging is pos- s'blythe best means for such enlight ment. In addition, the sheriff of Potls- illle is carrying out the ideas of penologists, who contend that the purpose of executions Is not so much toe punishment of the criminal as it ha preventative measure intended to deter others from committing sini I ilsr crimes. In this case his pro cedure is well calculated to diminish violence In that section of Pdinsyl tinia. "The cat es-.me back" was forcibly "d sorrowfully brought to the mind "a certain Gothamlte who bet $2.', tat he could lose his friend's cat su tiat it would never return. By EDWIN A. NYE. Copyrlqht. 1S0S. by Kilwln A.' Nye. TUE WIDTH OF A SMILE. This Is a statistical age. Everything nowadays must ! reduced to tbe av erage of tabulated tlgures. Following this disposition, nn Inquir ing Engllshmau with a genius for tlg ures has been devoting himself to the statistic of smites. Naturally be linds the smiles of women the more inter esting study. On an average, he says, a woman's mouth Is stretched a half inch each time she smiles. lie allows her thlrty sl.t smiles a day a fn Ir average and, according to this computation, the tem porary extensions of her lips umouut to the total of elgllten Inches. Very good Indeed! Pursuing these statistics, one enn easily figure that In an entire ,vearthe average uuiiaiu's fai-e would b: wreathed and twisted lato more than lsj yards of sunny, winsome smiles. And that is goim; soiae. This presumably a. -curate estimate, however. It must le remembered, takes no account of variations. You s.v. there arc some women who do not smile men' than the sixteenth part of an Inch at one attempt. And some of them do not niaUe the attempt more than thirty-six times a month. Their smiles are stlugy and therefore dllllcult to measure. Besides, they are tbe smiles that come off. Other gracious ones smile easily and often-all over their faces. Most any Uilug good will set their Umny lips to stretching and their dimples to dancing accompaniment to laughing ryes. Your English eiiK-rt cannot measure tbe ag gregate length of their smiles. Not on your life. That sort of smiles stretch leagues of happy laughter. And tlB-re are Borne men also who can do a good Job of smiling. The con vulsion of mirth starts somewhere down In the region of the dlnphrntu. creeps upward untii It sp reads nil over the Jolly counteiuini-c. Such smiles are somewhat less than a rod In length. They need no euIoi:y. Note, fur Instance, those types of hearty. Irrepressible, generous, wide open smiles by Theodore Roosevelt and William J. Bryan. Let your Englishman tackle them. Half an Inch? Why. they are as wide as a barn d.-r. Applying the Englishman's measure ments. Bryan and Roosevelt smile huge ly and without mental reservation sev enteen miles a day. ftlK.I) BAWI.NO John M.
