What is market day, anyhow? neems to bo the question of the day since the election excitement has quieted down. To give our readers a proper Idea, Max Zimmerman, the famous house auctioneer and origi nal promoter of market day celebra tions, was Interviewed today by one of our reporters. That there is nothing new under the sun, Is evi denced by market day. There Is not a school pupil in all Europe who does not know what "mark tag" Is, meaning market day in English, and the child looks forward to the going to town on tho regulur monthly mar ket day as any American girl looks for the first circus of the season. No noe stays at home on market day grandfathers, grandmothers, anuts, cousins, sweethearts and all the kids go to town. It's a grand gathering, a grand meeting place from miles around, not alone from the country, but the smaller towns and-vlllages as well, all flock to the metropolis. As all leading, up-to- date merchants have big bargains to offer on that day or establish market day bargain counters, everybody gets busy when In town with hand-shaking, gossiping and visiting stores. The nienfolks also get busy. While the women folks do the shopping the ninfl' buy, sell and swap horses and cattle. Buyers from other cities are here, and in short you have a market, and U gives tho farmer the highest market price for what he has to sell, as there Is competition, and wherev er there Is competition there Is llfo in trade. The farmer soon becomes as busy as the busiest merchant with his buying, selling and trading. It al so insures the farmer great bargains at the stores, which display booster cards, as one tries to outdo tne otn- er in bargains, and to catch the trade like the fellow on the fair grounds. The fellow who yells tho loudest sells the most. It has a circus day skin ned to death, and for the first inaiir gural market day It Is proposed to give the farmers a grand treat as well as bargains In tho Btores. there will be n bund concert, a grand horse Bhow, parade In .which all are invit ed to participate, a public wedding, prizes and premiums, and Zimmer man, the great Midway, St. Paul, auctioneer, who Is funnier than forty circus clowns, to entertain, and Eu gene will see the largest crowd ever seen In any city of Its size In the Northwest on its first market day. Saturday, June 20. Market day is certainly a great thing for the far mer, the merchant and the town and the Idea is to hold one here once a month. Let no one stay at home. Help boost the first one. She gave blm somo encour agement lie proposed and was ac cepted. In memory . of her parents Enid built a little church In the town where she lived: When it wns finished she cast about for some one to take charge of It as pastor. Laurence Keith, a re cent graduate of a theological semi nary, was recommended and finally . chosen for the position. Keith wns one of those young men who' from the first Indicate that they are destined to make their mark In the world. He had, first of all, that requi site for a pastor. Ihe gift of extempore utterance. When he h:id unyihing to say to his cougrogatioii be did not halt nor hesitate for words nor become in extricably Involved in the construction of sentences. Being at the head of a church built nnd endowed by Enid Kurd, t lie re were uiany things constantly arising for thoin to talk -over. They Invariably conllncd themselves to church and charitable Interests, seldom If ever dropping Into that small talk so natural to young people. Indeed, Mr. Keith treated Miss I-'ord as tho owner of the church of which he was pastor, and Miss Font treated Mr. Keith as the pastor of the church of which she was owner. When Mr. Keith had administered the alTalrs of the church and its con gregation a year Miss Ford said to him: I am very well pleased, Mr. Keith. with my selection of a pastor for my church. There is, however, one recom mendation you do not possess. A clor gymnn should hnvc n wife. On your salary, I admit, marriage would be un wise, but I can relieve this detlclency. Your salary for the next year will be double what It has been." Mr. Keith thought a few moments. then declined the ralso with the condi tion, wheroupou .Miss 'Ford assured him that there was no condition at tached, nnd he was satistied. A few more matters of business were talked over between them, when Miss Ford said: 1 have a request to make of you an invitation to extend to you and 1 don't wish y6u to bo Influenced In your acceptance by our relative positions. rcrhnps 1 am making too much of the matter, but everything connected with a girl's main event in life, marriage. Is the cause of deep feeling to her.'" . 1 can understand that, and It should, be so. What la this Invita tion ?" . . "Will you marry me?'' Mr. Keith looked at the girl In aston ishment, then, instead of making a reply, turned aud walked back and forth for several minutes In deep thought Meanwhile Miss Ford looked at blm, equally surprised. "1 do not think," he said at last, that such a course would be well for either of us. In a career such as.mlue wealth possessed by my wife would be n detriment to me, for my view of wealth is that It belongs to the poor. I have observed that, however liberal rich people are. their wealth Is their paramount Interest. With this predis position to hold nnd lncrcaso what you have, 1 would adviso you to many a rich man." It is needless to say that Miss Ford listened to this with Interest. Mr. Keith had mistaken her entirely. What sbo Intended to ns of him wns that be would perforin tho marriage ceremouy soon to take place between her nnd Walker Urooks. He had supposed that she, being rich, had considered it her part to propose marriage! When he had finished speaking, instead of In forming hlin of his blunder she said: "What you say is worthy of thought ful consideration." A week later Mr. Brooks received a noto from his fiancee stating that she had conio to tho conclusion that she was not tho woman sho would marry; that sho had resolved to spend her In come In doing good ouly and not lu pleasure seeking. Mr. Brooks was somewhat disappointed at losing so considerable an nddltlon to his for tune, calculating to spend tho united Incomo in fashionable living, nut bo weighed the matter and decided that ho would rather glvo up Miss Ford's fortune than soo It expended In build ing Institutions. Ho released her. From this time Miss Ford began to rely on her pastor In certain expendi tures which she designed on account of his experience In the line she proposed to spend the money nnd because of his administrative nullity, which was of the first order. It was not long be fore their Interests became Identical. Miss Ford furnished tho means for good, and Mr. Keith saw that the money went Into many a household where It wns not only a godsend, but wns expended to a practical pnrpose. One evening after they had been talk ing of these umtters Miss Ford snld: "Mr. Keith, I one gave you nn lnvl tntlon which you declined. . Wero the situation now what you Inferred It to be. your reasons for declining would have boon excellent. But since then have lunde my calling your calling t see no reason why a fortune held In trust, as I hold mine, for the poor should not continue to go through you to the greatest Rood. Again 1 ask. will yon marry me?" The second Invitation wai accepted. EMM.U.1NE C, BUIKE. A Thoughtless Druggist. QKLY a0thouglitless druggist would offer a preparation without the sW of Chas. H.
