The trees are set f fixTiU feet, each way, thus allowing plenty of sunlight. Ile.slrles this 7-Vaere grove I. X. Kd wards has tt.'ii acres, Kdward Hai-b-y 2i) acres of the grafted tree-:, .1. M. Nielson s: vi-n acres, all second generation trees, making a total of over 2 00 acres at this place, and the Wood cork -Dunn hand Company has ";" acres wven miles south of here. The land In this vicinity is espec ially adapted to the growing of the Kngllsh walnut and cherry trees, there being no hard pan for tho roots of ' the trees to come in contact with. There is deep soil for a depth of ten or twelve feet, when a very fine gravel and sand Is mixed with the soil, which permits the young, tender roots to penetrato to water easily. This con dition of soli Insures a permanent, healthy tree, and that they will not meet with the great disappointment some of tho California walnut grow-, era have had, where their groves have prospered for several years and gave . fine returns, but where the trees be gan to dlo In largo numbers each year. When the growers examined j them to determine the cause and were! unable to find any trace of disease, they concluded the trouble must be with tho roots of the trees. They then dug up tho trees and found that the roots had gone through the soil, struck hnrdpau, were unable to pene trate this In their efforts to find wa ter, and thus died for want of mois ture.
