The land In this vicinity is espec
ially adapted to the growing of the
Kngllsh walnut and cherry
trees, there being no hard
pan for tho roots of ' the
trees to come in contact with. There
is deep soil for a depth of ten or
twelve feet, when a very fine gravel
and sand Is mixed with the soil, which
permits the young, tender roots to
penetrato to water easily. This con
dition of soli Insures a permanent,
healthy tree, and that they will not
meet with the great disappointment

prospered for several years and gave .

they concluded the trouble must be

an ex-sherirf of Crk county, and
l.arkin Elliott, a cai'It-man, are in
the county Jail, chare d with arson.
Stanley Smith, a 14-year-old son of
the ex-sheriff, is In the custody of
Pick Vandent,'cfg. It Is thought he
was compelled to assh.t his father.
Smith and Llllott are thought to
have burned a .sheep-shearing plant
belonging to Williamson, as well as
a house ttnd barn, and to have cut a
mile of fence around tte? H. F. Al
len farm, which was leased by Wil
liamson. One dav William Stroud,
one of Willlamsor.'s herders, came to
town nrtnud with a , knife and a gun
nnd swore to kill Smith on slain, say
ing he and Elliott were soinK to use
dynamite on Williamson's property.
The ex-congressman was aroused
from his sleep and swoj e out a war
rant. Evidence was found to connect El-;
