A year ago there remained on hand over 500 of the biennial reports issued in 1905. The 1907 reports were avail able for distribution about the first of April and all were gone early in December. There remain now only a, small number of the 1901 and 1903 reports for distribution. The earlier and later reports have all been given out Geo. B. Dorrls in today's Guard makes ca excellent fair grounds prop osition w'.lch should be considered beforo ar.y definite steps are taken to close some other deal. This land ties close to the cty limits, is nicely situated and will no doubt be on the line of the electric railway coming In from Portland. Mr. Dorrls' price is reasonable and the terms he offers very easy. nil- . There Ib a lot of talk in the papers about the different political parties that will control the labor vote. It has been our observation that labor people, which means the rank and file of the male inhabitants of the coun try, vote along with one or the other of the parties, no matter who the nominee may be. It Is the way the average man has and he just can't help it. The prune Industry is one of grow ing Importance in Oregon. It is a question whether we are now plant ing as many prune trees in the state as will be needed to make up for the failing, yields in the older orchards and to supply the now steadily- grow ing demand for Oregon prunes, says the Oregon Agriculturist. ASSESSMENT TO BE LEVIED ON HOP GROWERS The mijst enthusiastic ann largest meeting of hongrowers held in this city since the organization of the Pacific Coast Hon drawers' Union has been under way, was held yester day at the city hull, says the Sulem btalesman. The police court room was filled to overflowing for two hours or more yesterday afternoon, with an attentive throng of growers. who listened to earnest anr forceful J speeches from various growers and I directors. I Th subject was thoroughly discus sed pro and con, and some good Ideas were advanced. It appeared to be the general sentiment of the meeting that the union should not bp abandoned, and that the movement must be car ried through at any cost. Paul It. G. Horst, the wealthy New York hop dealer and grower, was present, and although he declined to make nn ex tended talk made the statement that It the union could secure 80 per cent of the acreage It would be a success. The plan he considered entirely feas ible. The various plans of raising money tn carry on the work having b"Mi con sidered, a recolution was passed that an assessment of 25 centi p r acre should be levied on every grower that has signed the articles of the ts sociatlon, the money to bo lined for the purpose of putting some practical men in the field to push the work of securing more signers. Tho work of collecting the amount will b.i handled by Secretary Bamusartnor, thresh the vorlous precinct clerks. This should give n working fund of sev eral thousand dollars In a Lhort time. t One of the principal business firms of Chicago goes under the sugestlve title of Booz & Drinkwatcr, and ac cording to one of our truthful ex changes Drinkwater Is the hustler of the firm a chaser. The "poor fellow probably laid down last summer to take a little nap, and had just waked up. In St. Louis a jury acquitted a cit izen who killed a burglar and then bouirht his a gold medal. This is a pleasing reversal of the rule for the burglar to kill the citizen and then buy up the Jury. Hats off to the Pennsylvania jury which gave a verdict of $1400 dam ages against a thing In the shape of a man who sent a malicious comic valentine to a. woman wno had refus ed to marry him. With all due respect to those who thluk differently, we cannot endorse the proposition that preaching plain honesty makes a man either a radi cal or a socialist. kuatkkxaij nnoTHKitiioon TO HOI,l SPKCIAL MKKTIXO The Fraternal, Brotherhood will hold a special meeting February 17th at the Opera House hall at S p. m.
