Arthur , Brisbane, who writes the red-hot so cialist editorials on the New York Evening Journal, has bought an en tire deserted village In New Jersey and has thereby created much excite ment. The question that Is agitating his follows Is: "Will Brlsbano be a plutocratic landlord or an all-wool philanthrop ist?" The editor Is now the owner of Allaire, N. J., and all he paid for it was $125,000 cash. It Is under stood that the Allaire Water Supply & Land Company, the former owner, believes It has got the best of the bargain. Allaire is in Monmouth county, about six miles from Lnkewood and 2 0 from Ashbnry Park. It is on the Freehold and Janesburg division of the Pennsylvania ruilroad, but trains never stop there, because the town has not even a lonesome inhabitant. By his purchase Mr. Brisbane be comes the proud possessor of GO acres of land: a deserted iron found ry, six buildings where stoves were formerly manufactured, and the of fice building; 03 cottages, more or less dismantled and weather-beaten; a railroad station without any In terior fixings or windows; one church building. I Hrisliall'e Social Scheme. It is known that tho editor has j taken a great deal of interest In i Hulk-on hall, the Socialist colony founded by Upton Sinclair in New Jorsey, but he believed thnt the Sin clair experiment is doomed to be a failure. At llallcon hall, everything is enjoyed In common by the col onlHts. Whllo believing In many of tho principles of Socialism, Mr. Bris bane is not convinced thnt all men Bhould he placed on the same level, and he has not the slightest inten tion of whacking up Ills salary (which by the way was recently raised to $72,000 a year) with any I $2 a day hodenrricr. I When asked concerning his plans, regarding Allaire, Mr. Brisbane sim ply remarked that he Intended to experiment in model farming, but declined to give any further partic ulars. One of his friends said, how ver : "At the proper time you will see a practical demonstration of practi cal Socialism. It is Brisbane's in dention to divide his place up into Alberta. I un derstand that Nathan Strans Is In terested in the project. He and Bris bane are great friends, and. have been associated in a number of enterprises. The Intention is, I believe, to give each settler 20 or 30 acres of land, and see what he can do with It, in the way of raising vegetables (or the New York market. If be makes money, he is to be charged rent. This tax Is not to be a fixed charge, but a certain percentage on what he makes over living expenses. Should the farmer fall, despite bis best endeavors, not only will rental be waived, but he may receive some money. Loafers, however, are to be promptly thrown out. BIBLE LECTURES BY - A CONVERTED JEW To He Given At the Cumberlund Pres liyteriiin Church March 22 to 20. A series of Bible lectures will be Siven by Paul S. L. Johnson at the Cumberland Presbyterian church, cor ner Sixth and Pearl streets, March 23 to 26, at 7:30. Mr. Johnson was here last November and gave two very interesting lectures on "The Three Worlds" and "The Three Ages in the Second World." He Is a con verted Hebrew, and possesses re markable ability as a speaker and Bible teacher. His lectures are mas terly presentations of the great truths of the Bible. He shows that the Bible teachings when properly understood are scientific, logical, har monious and complete, satisfying the exactions of the Intellect as well as the cravings of the heart. Mr. John 3on is one of 15 lecturers on the Bi ble traveling under the auspices of the Bible and Tract Society of Alle gany, Pa., holding free public meet- BIG TRUST PAPER JUMPS ON HARRIMAN NEW YORK, March 19. The Sun, which is owned by J. Pierpont Morgan and recognized as a Wall organ, on its financial page said yes terday: "It is manifest now that the spe cific cause of the recent disturbance In the market centers around in fluences connected with the activity in the railway and financial world of Edward J. Harrlman and the great speculations In Union Pacific and Southern Pacific common shares in the closing part of last summer. "When the process of obtaining money for new railway work be came a matter of hardship, and the feeling of distrust of a certain sort of financiers that had become en gendered by the Insurance Investi gation was blown into new and great er life by testimony given at the Interstate commerce commission's investigation of the Harrlman man agement, a collapse in the stock mar ket almost Inevitably followed. The inquiry most frequently made In the financial district at this moment Is as to the exact part played in all this by Harrlman. "Did Harrlman and the other cap italists with him Interested in Union Pacific put their holdings of stocks on the market as fast as they could Immediately after the announcement of Union Pacific and Southern Pacific dividends, or were they caught in a trap of their own making and found themselves in the present lianlc load ed with securities Just like the or dinary small Wall street gamblers?
