ARTHUR BRISBANE'S
GREAT SOCIAL SCHEME
1 ,
; NEW YOIIK, March 19. Arthur
, Brisbane, who writes the red-hot so
cialist editorials on the New York
Evening Journal, has bought an en
tire deserted village In New Jersey
and has thereby created much excite
ment. The question that Is agitating
his follows Is:
"Will Brlsbano be a plutocratic
landlord or an all-wool philanthrop
ist?" The editor Is now the owner of
Allaire, N. J., and all he paid for
it was $125,000 cash. It Is under
stood that the Allaire Water Supply
& Land Company, the former owner,
believes It has got the best of the
bargain.
Allaire is in Monmouth county,
about six miles from Lnkewood and
2 0 from Ashbnry Park. It is on the
Freehold and Janesburg division of
the Pennsylvania ruilroad, but trains
never stop there, because the town
has not even a lonesome inhabitant.
By his purchase Mr. Brisbane be
comes the proud possessor of GO
acres of land: a deserted iron found
ry, six buildings where stoves were
formerly manufactured, and the of
fice building; 03 cottages, more or
less dismantled and weather-beaten;
a railroad station without any In
terior fixings or windows; one church
building.
I Hrisliall'e Social Scheme.
It is known that tho editor has
j taken a great deal of interest In
i Hulk-on hall, the Socialist colony
founded by Upton Sinclair in New
Jorsey, but he believed thnt the Sin
clair experiment is doomed to be a
failure. At llallcon hall, everything
is enjoyed In common by the col
onlHts. Whllo believing In many of
tho principles of Socialism, Mr. Bris
bane is not convinced thnt all men
Bhould he placed on the same level,
and he has not the slightest inten
tion of whacking up Ills salary
(which by the way was recently
raised to $72,000 a year) with any
I $2 a day hodenrricr.
I When asked concerning his plans,
regarding Allaire, Mr. Brisbane sim
ply remarked that he Intended to
experiment in model farming, but
declined to give any further partic
ulars. One of his friends said, how
ver :
"At the proper time you will see
a practical demonstration of practi
cal Socialism. It is Brisbane's in
dention to divide his place up into

bane are great friends, and. have been
associated in a number of enterprises.
The Intention is, I believe, to give
each settler 20 or 30 acres of land,
and see what he can do with It, in
the way of raising vegetables (or the
New York market. If be makes
money, he is to be charged rent.
This tax Is not to be a fixed charge,
but a certain percentage on what
he makes over living expenses.
Should the farmer fall, despite bis
best endeavors, not only will rental
be waived, but he may receive some
money. Loafers, however, are to be
promptly thrown out.

A series of Bible lectures will be

here last November and gave two
very interesting lectures on "The
Three Worlds" and "The Three Ages
in the Second World." He Is a con

markable ability as a speaker and
Bible teacher. His lectures are mas

truths of the Bible. He shows that
the Bible teachings when properly
understood are scientific, logical, har

the cravings of the heart. Mr. John
