Uriirougli the blinds of the (,-reutest men of lenra lK of nil times wlihout imy ad.unto solution until the dawn of the twenti eth century. The Grecian Archimedes, the Edison of his day, was perhaps the llrst to handle the question and to set It traveling down the centuries. Erics son, tho American, and Mouchout, the Frenchman, were among the hist to seek the sohitlon, and both succeeded hi making the sun operate small mo tors. Nothing more was dono until Dr. William t'alver of Washington Invent ed the pan-heltometer and can now control a greater degree of heat than nian ever operated before. The fiercest degreo of heat that any ono has hitherto been able to make Is the 0,000 degrees that has been regis tered In the electric arc. Dr. Calver Is aide to generate 24,000 degrees of heat. Of this he Is able to control 10,000 de grees with absolute safety, while ho Is at present at work constructing an ap paratus which will easily give him tho nmstery over tho full amount of heat that he generates. With his Invention, which briefly consists of an arrangement of mirrors to reflect the sun's rays upon a focus hiK spot. Dr. Calver could burn dowu a rocky mountain and reduce It to a level plane without as much ns lighting a inntch. Russian Iron of the kind so unburnnble that It extinguishes the Are In the fiercest furnaces melts under the heat nt his control as a wax match Is melted by the flame. Tough silver coins or stout glass tumblers become in a moment running liquid In the beat of the focused rays, while with his ap paratus he will perforate a soaking wet plank of wood with a dozen holes In as many seconds. reurson's Magazine. The niapenser. We have no barmaids In this country, but women In general must be interest ed to learn that "bartender" la no lon ger the proper term, but "dispenser." Invitations sent out to the houso warm ing of a new cafe last week bore in large typo a name with "proprietor" underneath and In smaller type three other names followed by tho word "dispensers." I'hllologlcally the new word Is not Ro good, because not so truthful as of old. Ethically It sounds better. "Dispenser" has quite the air of n rise In tho social scale almost of making a bid for respectability. It de serves high rank in that list of like titles, Including, among others, "dem onstrators," as the agents of various firms call themselves at food shows; Iirooklyn's name for hor undertakers, "morticians," and "healers" not ward, but Christian Science. New York Sun. Neir Form of Phonoirrnpli. Among the exhibits at tho Paris ex position was a phonograph invented by Valdcnmr I'oulseu, n Danish engineer, which uses a wire wound Instead of a wax covered cylinder. The wire Is of steel and over It In place of the usual stylus passes a small electromagnet connected with n telephone transmitter and battery. The Bound waves cause a variation in tho Intensity of the electro magnet, and tho magnet, acting upon tho wire passing beneath It, leaves a nermanent Impression upon the latter. Upon reversing the action the wire re acts on the magnet, nnd corresponding sounds nre transmitted by the tele phone. In order to obliterate the mag netic trace on the cylinder it 1b only necessary to revolve It under the mag net while this Is subjected to a continu ous current. Tim Tcllow Peril. The real "yellow peril" will be pres ent when the Chlneso nre awakened to the full knowledge of the resources of their empire and have their atten tion strongly directed to manufactur ing. What the civilized world has most to fear Is the arousing of China from her present lethargic condition to a realization of the possibilities within her reach. The Chinese are ln duBtrlous and thrifty. They are willing to work and to work for small wages. They can easily be taught to do al most auythlng. They quickly become expert operatives In cotton factories, and It would not be dlllicult to teach them to be skillful workmen In all kinds of manufacturing. Savannah News. " A Dig Tunnel Project. M. Berller, a French engineer, has for some years past been engaged on a glgnntlc project for a railway tun nel from the south of Spain to the African const, a distance of about liSMi miles. The French foreign oflice have up to the present declined to seriously consider M. Berber's scheme and he Is now on his way to Fez with a view to securing the co-operation of the sul tan of Morocco. M. Berller considers that the construction of this tunnel would lead to great commercial de velopments In Morocco. Lenrnlnx notch to I'leaae a lnern. T!;i people of Washington are In fa vor of milking the Inauguration next -March an occasion of unprecedented display. They would celebrate the L-randcur of the nation, tho progress and prosperity of the people and the results of the census as well as the election of a president. No plans have as yet liecn formed. According to cus tom, Mr. llnnnn, chairman of the na tional committee of the successful par ty, v.'lll designate some citizen of ap propriate character and distinction to take the lead In making arrangements. Four years ago Charles J. Bell, a banker, was tho chairman nnd proved to be the most competent we have ever bad. There would be unlversnl satls fai tton if Mr. Bell were again Intrusted with the inauguration arrangements, nlthough other gentlemen nro more anxious to assume the responsibility than he, writes the Washington corre spondent of tho Cleveland Plain Deni er. The expenses of tho Inauguration are usually paid by the sale of tickets to a social function Improperly called a "ball." for nobody was ever known to dance In recent years. In olden times, when Washington w as a small town and the difficulties of travel prevented a large attendance at Inauguration ceremonies, It was cus tomary to give a banquet In honor of the president elect and a ball In honor of his wife. Tho outgoing president would lead the cotillon with the wife of his successor, and the president elect would follow with tho lady of the White House. Time and multitudes have chonged this ceremony until now the president Is only expected to wolk through the rooms accompanied by his wife and other gentlemen and ladles of distinction. For the last 20 years the assembly has been held In the brick paved court of the pension office, which In many re spects Is well adapted for the purpose, although It Is bo small that those who wish to attend cannot be comfortably accommodated. Four years ago there was such a crush that women fainted. Others had their gowns half torn off them, lu fact, nobody familiar with Inauguration balls wears anything but old garments. This year It Is proposed to erect a special building for tho ball or recep tlon or whatever It may be cnlled largo enough to accommodate every person who desires to attend. It Is also pro posed to have a military parade un precedented In numbers and In gor geousness. The New French Field Can, As for the uew French fleldpleee, ev erybody knows that ltB superiority lies In the fact that the breech contains a brake which completely Indeed, math- eninticnlly nullifies the effects of the recoil. There are not more than ten people in France, Including officers and chiefs of government workshops, who know In nil details tho secrets of the hydropneumntlc brake. The pieces of which It Is composed are manufactured separately. When they are adjusted, there remains still another tiling to be done which cannot be accomplished by means of a plan or any kind of docu ment, because the feat requires a sn- volr falro or, rather, a tour do main which can only bo ncqulred by expe rience. As soon as It Is accomplished the brake Is closed up In a Bteel case- Statement of Staff Officer In Echo do Paris. Paper Furniture. For some time furniture made of pa per, on account of Its cheapness, has been very popular In English bouses where there was a desire to be Impos ing, but where good solid furniture would bo too costly. Now decorators of houses, even of thoso of wealthy people, employ compressed paper lurge ly, especially for paneling work for halls, corridors, eto. Very lino baluster rails nre also made In Imitation of mn hognny. The houses of mnuy artists aro furnished throughout with pnpier macho with metal Inlay. Even (lower pots and vases which are generally taken for majolica ware and porcelain nro composed of paper as well as the costly antique weapons with which the walls are hung. The coffco growing Industry In trop ical Africa Is Increasing. Tho Bccd was Introduced Into that country about five years ago by some English mis sionaries with the object of ascertain ing whether the resources of Africa wero favorable to tho culture of tho bean. The ground appears to bo pecul iarly adapted to the Industry, as 100 tons of coffee wero exported from Uganda alone last year. The result of this year's production will be even greater.
