"Old Bam," the Itinerant fiddler, was with us again last nlgbt and entertained (?) a crowd on the corner of Eighth and Willameete streets. This man is un doubtedly one of tbe most unique and peculiar characters In tbe United States, as be travels up and down all over the country and makes a living with bis fiddle. He baa been here sev eral times before this visit. He has a remarkable faoulty of making little rhymes suited to the occasion and these be sings to the accompaniment of his violin. The little town scandals are certain to receive bis attention, Asa violinist, he makes little preten tion to artistic excellence. He is an old-style fiddler and saws about three strings at once. His voice is high keyed, nasal and grotesque, yet there is something in It wbloh sifts the risi bility of bis bearers to an unwonted degree. Tbe man's appearance is in keeping with his muslo; he is himself wizened, leathery and grotesque, yet so bright and cheerful that he lustllla a hearty good humor Instantly and no one grudges him the nlckles and dimes wbioh he solicits for "the fiddler." $35 $40 "TRUE AS STEEL AND SKILL CAN MAKE THEM." I Hops Balem Statesman: Hop grow era are more gennerally making con tracts than tbey have done for several years. This Is due to several causes, ohlef among whlcb Is the faot that the prices offered are higher than for a long time. Another la tbe fact that hop dealera now in tbe business are generally more reliable than tbe average of those In the past. It Is evident that the consumers In Eng. land and In the East, for whom most of tbe contracts are being made, have oonoluded that It Is the safest plan for them to be sure of a supply at living prices, instead of waiting until after harvest, with the hope of beating the growers down to impoverishing prices. Died. At Creswell, this morning, March 21, 1901, at 8 o'olook, Eli Davis, aged 77 years, aflei an Illness of several months. Tbe deceased has been a res ident of Creswell for one year. The Jury, at Judge Burnett's request, informed him at one o'olock that it would prob ably be impossible for them to agree. At that hour they should have been given their dinners. It Isoertaluly a bad praotlce to treat human beings thusly. A good dinner baa settled many a dispute. At least one of the men locked up, Juror J A Burlingame, has been In 111 health for over two years and this will certainly do him barm, or Is likely to. And there are others. aqkd Men.
