The children of the desort were (lHcd with awe when first the silence of the primeval solitude was broken by the pulling of the steam engine. Down at the other end of the Cape to Cairo line the simple Mntnbele, when first con fronted by a locomotive, were certain that the strange machine was worked by the labor of an Indefinite number of oxen, which they assumed were shut up InBlde; hence, when the engine stop ped, they gathered In curious crowds, waiting to see the door open and the oxen come out, nor could they for many dnys be persuaded that the power of tho locomotive co: !il come from other than the strength uf the ox. The Arabs of the Sudan, more imag inative than the Mntnbele, saw In the fire horses of the railway one of the DJlnns of the "Arabian Nights," har nessed by the magic ot the Infidel to the long train of cars. The steam en- glue was to them a living, sentient being. Of which belief there Is curi ous evidence In the fact that on one occasion a sheik made an Impassioned remenstranco against the cruelty of making so small an engine draw so huge a train. To be so lnsultcu on her own doorstep was such a heinous crime that her resources failed her. But In a moment she hit upon a plan that would bring this piece of insolence to abject humility. Drawing her stately figure up to the full and fixing on him a gaze of Im perious disdain, she said In measured, rrlgld tones, "I am tho lady of the house." Did he quail? Oh, no! "Are you?" he rejoined quickly. "Why didn't you say so nnd not keep mo waiting all this time? In former times persons guilty of grievous and notorious offenses were required to make open confession and, further, to mnko satisfaction for the scandal given by their bad exnmple by doing penance publicly in a white sheet In their parish church. The sheet was used to show clearly to every one which was the offender. The last time that public penance was done In nu English church was on Sunday evening, July 30, 18S2, when a man named Hartroo, in tho church of All Saints, East Clevedou, made an open confession of Immorality and promised to perforin the penanco thus Imposed on him by the vicar. No white sheet was used on this oc casion. The last case In which ono was used appears to havo been ono In St. Bridget's church, Chester, In 1801. But on Umt occasion the penance was not public, the church door being locked.
