MUSICAL RECITAL.
The recital at Villard Hall Saturday
night, given by pupils of Mr. . W.
Gifford Nash and Miss Marguerite
Hansen, of the musical department,
was well attended and the program
proved to be most excellent. A num
ber of the pupils were mere obildren,
but their work was characterized by
thoroughness and precision, The
Treble Clef club was heard to advan
tage in two numbers and responded to
demands made for encores. Of tbe
soloists Miss Kensbaw, voice, and
Misses Bickers, Warfleld, Cockerline
and Ford, piano, deserve special mention.
Eugene Oratorio Boolety.
Tbe Eugene Oratorio Sooiety will
meet Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock
in Frank's hall. Copies of tbe Saint
Paul (Mendelssohn) can be obtained at
Scbwarzsoblld's book store; price, 66

Times: Tbe family of the late Wll
liam Burbee, drowned last week at
Junction, will receive a neat sum from
tbe A. O. U. W. order, for their future
maintenance, and thereby hangs a
touching story. Borbee was very poor.
He was a bard working man, but there
were several little children in the fam
ily, and It took all his scanty earnings
to provide for them. A few weeks be
fore bis death Mr. Bcrbee'a dues in tbe
lodge of which he was a member, fell
in arre irs. A friend noted the faot, and
made it known to several of the mem
bers. Among them they raised tbe
amount necessary to place their brother
In good standing. Scarcely had this
charitable work been . done when
Burbee rode Into tbe swollen slough
from which the body was subsequently
recovered. The husband and father
was lone; the hand that had been the
aupportof tbe wife and children was
nerveless. Hut the fraternal spirit o

Oregon, on Thursday, April 12, 100,
at 10 o'clock a. m., for tbe purpose of

justice of tbe supreme court, congress
man, dairy and food commissioner,
olrcuit judges and distrlot attorneys,
and the various joint senators and rep

Log Rolled on and Killed a Four Year
Ola Boy.
Florence West January 26.
A terrible acoldent occurred about
ten o'clock Sunday morning, January
21st, 1900, at the home of Andrew
Hartley on Maple creek, Douglas
county, about six miles southeast of
Florence, by which Artbnr, the four-year-old
son of Mr. Hartley, lost bis
life Instantly.
The bey was playing around while
his father was at work on a hillside
sawing a log. Just as the saw cut
through, the boy climbed up on the
log, when It started to roll, thruwlus;
him to the ground beiow and passing
over his bead stopped aoross his breast.
Mr. Hartley dug away the earth and
took the boy out from underneath the
log as quickly as be oould, but life was
exllnot, tbe weight of the Jog, some
fifteen inches In diameter and twelve
feet long, having caused instant death.

Cottage Urove Fire Limits.
Cottacje Qhove, Or., Jan. 28. A
strong fight Is being made to the city
uounoll to have the fire limits abol
ished In East Cottage Urove, which
covers eight blocks. This ordinance
was adopted by tbe old Lemall coun
cil, and was approved by tbe College
Grove counoil when the towns were
consolidated. It bas prevented many
wooden buildings from being erected
in the past two years. The council Is
equally divided on the question, three
for and three against, and the deciding
vote will be left to Mayor Brlstow,
and It Is believed he will oast his vote
to sustain the fire limits. Three
fourths of the business men will fight
to the end to have the limits remain as
they are, profiting by the experience of
other towns. The agitation bas arisen
from men of limited means desirous of
engaging In business and not bavlnir
sufficient funds to construct brick
buildings.
