Some business meD simply put their money into aoy old kind of advertising, whether it reaches the people or not, and trust to lu ;k for the rest. That's Kvnblini?. Others make a reasonable appropriation and then buy the kind of advertis ing beet suited to their needs', and fihich is certain to reach the people with wbm they may deal. That's business, Mr. Cleveland has come to life sufficiently to express his opinions In regard to the party that honored him more tban any other man now living. And there !b no uncer tainty about the opinion that tbe party holds of the man that it twice elected. His name was greeted witb a roar ot bisies in tbe last Demooratio national convention that was being held while Mr. Cleveland was still at the helm. Tbe war in the Philippines, if tbe guerilla fighting could properly be designated by such a name, is prac tically over. Account of Their Discovery in Pioneer Days. RICHEST FIND IN SOUTHERN OREGON. lu view of the notoriety which haa been triven this camp through the imnitiiine output of the Sterling Mining Company, it will bo of iotrtttt Ki many poplt in Southern Ortoc, w well as icftoy in the Btiate at Urge who have witnessei the large dupUy of fe-old from the mines in the show windows at Portland, lo know when, how, and by whom this rich camp was discovered. In the spring of 1854, James Sterling and Aaron Davis owned, and were working, a claim on Jackson creek. I'hey also owned a ranch south of Phoenix near Keameu donation claim. They left their claim on Jackson creek and went out to the ranch to put in crop. After completing their work, they returned to their claim, but having re mained away beyond the limit allow id by local mining regulations, they had forfeited their right to the claim, and it had been jumped. They went over to Applegate to pronpect and finding nothing that was satisfactory started home across the mountain by way of Sterling creek. When they arrived about where the old town of Sterling used to b( they stopped to rest and lunch. While there, Mr. Sterling said, "this looks like a good place to prospect." He took a pan of dirt from the roots of an upturned tree and washing ft out get about a dollar. Further prospecting convinced them that they had discovered a rich camp that was destined to become a large gold producer. The Indians were n -Diddered to be dangerous to small parties iu the mountains, and as the men were Immediately on the Indian trail that led from the valley to Little Applega'e they were afraid to remain there long and Went across the mountain to their ranch. On the follow ing day which was the lout day of May or the 1st, of June '64, in company with J . P. Burns Geo. Kockafellow and John Honum, they re turned to the place of discovery, to more fully proHpect ft, with the location of claim.. They prospected Friday and a part of Sntur day with pans, and washed out $W, one piece weighing $12. On leaving for home they agreed not to stake oH any claims, or make known the diBcovery until alter their return Qn the following Thursday when they all would return togather with their supplies and select their claims. On their teturn home they went by where Hub and John Coleman, oasU-ed by others, were raiding a house. The actions of some of the party aroused the sus picions of some of those at the raising. They were satisfied that an Important discovery had been made. The party was plied with all sorts of curious quostisns touching their late where abottts, and every effort wan made to wring tht socret of the discovery from them. All stood firm bnt one. This was Saturday. Ab tiiddiugs got around Aaron DsvIb and by some means or othajr wormed the secret out of him, and on Sunday morning Davis and Ohld Ins, notwithstanding Davis' agreement with the discoverers, went over to the creek and staked off their claims. On Monday Sterl.ug went to Jacksonville to buy his sup plies. Tuesday was election day. Sterling got full and gave the discovery away which caused a regular stampede from Jacksonville and adjacent mining campa, and when Sterling reached the icene of the discovery' he met an army of men, and the camp staked off as far as ho oould see. Through the treachery of Davli, aud Sterling's intemperate folly he got uo claim at all. Ihere has been more than four million dollars taken out of Sterling creok and It Is still one ct the largest gold pro ducing camps In the country. Cuuticllman HurrowB la Nw a Good AiiiorU'ttii, Balom Journal, Two meu have beeu adudted to citizenship by the county judge within a week, Alfred Brown, a native of Canada, and Thomas Burrows, a native of England. It may be somewhat ol a suyrfae to find a member of the city council taking out big cltlxenshlp pajwrs, biit the fact is Mr. Burrows has been a clUien nearly alt of his life and has voted and held otlice, but when he came to register he ran up against a snog, lie came to this country with his parent be for he was of age, and his father after ward admitted to citizenship, which made "lummy" aoitlsen. But the old gnu tinman ii uow dead and Mr. Burrows does not know tn what court he waaluaturalised. Even if he did know, it would cost him as much to get a trausoript of the record as It has to take out papers of his own, so he has Ukeu the latter course, and is now straight on the registration book. This course will probably be touud the uhd4l.et and easiest lu many cases where those of foreign birth or nuot produce the re quired evidence that they have boon oat uraliied. Any one who would have pre lie ted a few year ago that the center of the sugar producing region would shortly shift from the tropical to the temperate sona wovdd havt been laughed at. Two-thirds of the world's sugar crop Is Is now produced from Iwets raised in the Wui perata sones of tteriiuuiy, Austria, Vrauoe and the United Stat.
