In former times persons guilty of
grievous and notorious offenses were
required to make open confession and,
further, to mnko satisfaction for the
scandal given by their bad exnmple by
doing penance publicly in a white sheet
In their parish church. The sheet was
used to show clearly to every one
which was the offender.
The last time that public penance
was done In nu English church was
on Sunday evening, July 30, 18S2, when
a man named Hartroo, in tho church of
All Saints, East Clevedou, made an
open confession of Immorality and
promised to perforin the penanco thus
Imposed on him by the vicar.
No white sheet was used on this oc
casion. The last case In which ono
was used appears to havo been ono In
St. Bridget's church, Chester, In 1801.

when the steamer leaves a rush Is ex
pected that cau ouly be likened to the
stampede for life rafts when a ship is
sinking.
The recipient of the letter found that
the envelope had been cut at eaoh cor

authorities, for mail comiug from the
plague-ridden port is fumigated aud
disinfected before being forwarded.
