Mr.' and Mrs. Thomas Sears, of Cot tage Grove, have been visiting at the home, of his brother, Walter Sears, during the past week. J. H. Cornwall, of Sodaville, has purchased the H. M. Brigham property in Fir Park addition and will make his home in Dallas Id future. Max Crandall, of Hilisboro, is in Dallas exporting the books of the various county officials, and will prob ably be here for about two weeks.. B. J. Duncan, director of the Dallas band, was In Falls City this week com pleting arrangements for the reorgani zation of the' Falls City band. The rapidly increasing amount of improvement being done on the streets of Dallas, keeps Marshal T. A. Odom busy almost continually with the work of repairing or replacing old cross walks, or the installing of walks in new parts of the city. , ' S. P. Howard and son, Edward, of Detroit, Michigan, are visiting at the home of Mrs. Howard's sister, Mrs. Nancy Fowler, and intend to make their home in Oregon in future. Mrs. Fowler is also entertain ing her niece, Miss Ivy Stanley, who arrived , in Dallas from Monroe, Michigan, Wednesday morning. The annual school meeting for Dis trict Number 2, will be held at the Courthouse, Monday afternoon, June 17, at a o'clock p. m., for the purpose of electing a director to serve for three years, and a clerk to serve for one year, and for the transaction of such other business as may come before the meeting. Phillip Domm of Spring Valley has probably opened the hay harvesting season for this part of the country. Last Saturday Mr. Domm cut several acres of first crass alfalfa, which he thought would go at least two tons to the acre. This la considered extra good for bay cut so early In the sea son. Salem Statesman. The .people residing In the south eastern suburbs of Dallas have peti tioned for the creation of a new school district In that neighborhood, and their petition will come before the Boundary Board In July. The pro posed district will comprise portions of districts 8, 13, 24 and 64 and will be the sixty-seventh district in Polk county. The Public School Library in Dallas has grown phenomenally during the past year, thanks to the united and hearty efforts of both teachers and pupils for its upbuilding. It now con tains about 600 volumes, an Increase of ISO over the number in the shelves last year, and another shipment of 150 more has been ordered, making a total increase of practically 300 volumes during the past year. PHOEBE' LEONARD DEAD Highly Respected Resident of Polk County Passes Away After Long Illness. Mrs. C. W. Leonard died at her home in Monmouth, Tuesday morn ing at 8 o'clock at the age of 63 years, her death being due to a long and severe attack of pneumonia. Mrs. Leonard, whose maiden name was Phoebe Ireland, was a daughter of one of the. prominent pioneer familjes of Oregon. She was first married to Frank Maggart, and after his death she married Charles W, Leonard. 'who survives, her. No children were born to either union. The funeral will be held. in the Christian church in Monmouth this afternoon at 3 o'clock and the remains will be buried In the Knights of Phythias cemetery. The following pupils completed the ninth grade in the Dallas Public School this year: Misses Letitia Shewey, Lola Syron, Pearl Foland, Ruth Nunn, Una Campbell, Inez Ridgeway, Iva McDanlel, Nada Scott, Leone Williams, Josie Faull, Anna Rasmussen and Dena Butz.
