J. H. Cornwall, of Sodaville, has
purchased the H. M. Brigham property
in Fir Park addition and will make
his home in Dallas Id future.
Max Crandall, of Hilisboro, is in
Dallas exporting the books of the
various county officials, and will prob
ably be here for about two weeks..
B. J. Hecker, the well-known stock
man, left Tuesday morning for a three
weeks' trip through Polk county on a
purchasing expedition. Albany Her
ald. Abel Uglow; Manfred Sears, W. W.
Ullrey and Hardy Holman went to
Portland yesterday to serve as wit
nesses In a trial before the Federal
Grand Jury.
Charles R. Harned, of the Pbilli
pines, United States Marine Corps,
has been visiting at the homes of his
sisters, Mrs. Andrew Siefarth and Mrs.
L. O. Lemmon.

Dr. Lowe, the optician, has been
coming to Dallas for more than 16
years, and by his skill, honesty and
fair dealing, has built up a fine busi
ness. He will be here June 15 and 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Cal Kramer have
returned to Falls City, and Charles
Mann is taking Mr.. Kramer's place
as clerk in the Gail Hotel, during the
illness of the proprietor, J. B. Thomp

of Dallas College, left yesterday for a
three days' fishing trip on the Little
Luckiamute, two miles above Black
Rock.
The gravel that is removed from
Main street In the work of grading, is
being hauled away and used as a base
for the concrete sidewalks that are
being built extensively in different
parts of the city.
R. F. Robinson, of the class of '84, of
LaCreole Academy, now superin
tendent of public instruction In Mult
nomah county, was in Dallas this
week and attended the alumni reunion

A decrease of over 22,000 in the num
ber of idle freight cars during the
latter half of May Is shown In the
fornightly report of the American

The Rev. A. A. Winter and Rev. 0. C.
Poling, who have been attending the
commencement exercises of Dallas
College, returned to Portland yester
day. Charles Poling will rernaia in
Dallas for a short visit
W. L. Gilson returned yesterday
from a business visit in Vancouver,
Washington. Mr. Gilson has pur
chased about 64 acres of land In the
suburbs of that city, which he pro
poses to divide Into lots for sale.

The young women of the Epworth
League will have a sale of home bak
ing at the Stafrin drug store, Satur
day afternoon, and the patronage of
everyone Is solicited.
Falls City has definitely deoided to
hold a big celebration at that place on
the Fourth of July, and at the meet
ing of the Falls City Commercial Club,
Monday, committees were appointed to
carry on the preparations for the event.
Miss Olive Smith's class of music
pupils will give a recital in the Pres
byterian church, Tuesday evening at
8 o'clock. An excellent program has
been prepared for the occasion, and
everyone Is cordially Invited to attend.
I. B. Duncan, director of the Dallas
band, was In Falls City this week com
pleting arrangements for the reorgani
zation of the' Falls City band. Mr.
Duncan will organize a class in Falls
City similar to the one already organ
ized in Dallas.
Next Monday and Tuesday, two
days only. (J une 15 and 16), Dr. Lowe,
the well-known oculo-optlcian, will be
in Dallas at the Hotel Gall. It the

The rapidly increasing amount of
improvement being done on the streets
of Dallas, keeps Marshal T. A. Odom
busy almost continually with the work
of repairing or replacing old cross
walks, or the installing of walks in
new parts of the city. , '
S. P. Kimball is erecting a $4000
residence on his West Salem hill
property and Royal Anne cherry farm.

afternoon for The Breakers, Wash
ington, where they will represent the

A., to be held at that place from June

Miss Lillian McVicker will return
with her parents from the Evangelical
college at Dallas this week where she
graduates. She expects to remain at
home the coming twelve months, hav
ing been elected to a position in the
publjo school of Corvallls for the com

ing her niece, Miss Ivy Stanley, who
arrived , in Dallas from Monroe,
Michigan, Wednesday morning.
The annual school meeting for Dis
trict Number 2, will be held at the
Courthouse, Monday afternoon, June
17, at a o'clock p. m., for the purpose
of electing a director to serve for three
years, and a clerk to serve for one
year, and for the transaction of such
other business as may come before
the meeting.
Phillip Domm of Spring Valley has
probably opened the hay harvesting
season for this part of the country.
Last Saturday Mr. Domm cut several
acres of first crass alfalfa, which he
thought would go at least two tons to
the acre. This la considered extra
good for bay cut so early In the sea
son. Salem Statesman.
The .people residing In the south
eastern suburbs of Dallas have peti
tioned for the creation of a new school
district In that neighborhood, and
their petition will come before the
Boundary Board In July. The pro
posed district will comprise portions
of districts 8, 13, 24 and 64 and will be
the sixty-seventh district in Polk
county.
The Public School Library in Dallas
has grown phenomenally during the
past year, thanks to the united and
hearty efforts of both teachers and
pupils for its upbuilding. It now con
tains about 600 volumes, an Increase
of ISO over the number in the shelves
last year, and another shipment of 150
more has been ordered, making a total
increase of practically 300 volumes
during the past year.

MRS. PHOEBE' LEONARD DEAD
Highly Respected Resident of Polk
County Passes Away After
Long Illness.
Mrs. C. W. Leonard died at her
home in Monmouth, Tuesday morn
ing at 8 o'clock at the age of 63 years,
her death being due to a long and
severe attack of pneumonia.
Mrs. Leonard, whose maiden name
was Phoebe Ireland, was a daughter
of one of the. prominent pioneer
familjes of Oregon. She was first
married to Frank Maggart, and after
his death she married Charles W,
Leonard. 'who survives, her. No
children were born to either union.
The funeral will be held. in the
Christian church in Monmouth this
afternoon at 3 o'clock and the remains
will be buried In the Knights of
Phythias cemetery.

ninth grade in the Dallas Public
School this year: Misses Letitia
Shewey, Lola Syron, Pearl Foland,
Ruth Nunn, Una Campbell, Inez

Leone Williams, Josie Faull, Anna
Rasmussen and Dena Butz. These
pupils will take up the tenth grade
work next year, while the ninth grade
will be recruited from the class who
have just finished the eighth grade.
