The Polk County Pioneer Associa tion has set its - annual picnic for Thursday, June 18, the first d:iy of the big street carnival to be held in Dallas next'month. A construction train passed through Dallas yesterday on the way to Luck iamute, between Monmouth and"Air lie, where there is considerable bridge repair work to bo done. R. E. Williams, of the Polk County delegation to the state convention held in Portland last week, was chosen as one of the delegates to the National Republican Convention. Morris Fowle returned to Dallas, Friday night, after a few weeks' stay in San Francisco, during which he had the pleasure of visiting tha big fleet of the Atlantic squadron. The final examinations for the eighth grade were closed Friday and the papers are now in the hands of the examiners. Superintendent Seymour says that the full list of the grades Will be completed this week. Professor W. I. Reynolds, principal of the Orogon State Reform School, is in Polk county for a fwo weeks' can vass for the office of School Superin tendent, during which time he will make his headquarters in Dalla?. Neal McMillan, one of the national secretaries of the Y. M. C. A., was In Dallas today on his way to the Rlb'e Conference to be held in California, and addressed the members of tie Y. M. C. A. of Dallas College in the chapel this afternoon. A special memorial sermon will be preached at the Methodist church, Sunday morning, and all members of the G. A.. R. are cordially invited to attend. At the evening services, the Rev. M. P. Dixon will deliver his annuul temperance lecture. At the meeting of the Trustees of. Willamette University, held in Port land, Saturday, no successor for President - Coleman, who recently resigned, was chosen. Another meet ing has been called for Thursday, May 21 and it la believed that Dr. Coleman's successor will be named at that time.
