It Is well known that the bitter rot of apples Is due to a specitio fundus. This fundus grows on developing ap pies, beglnnlug at any time during the cummer or autumn when the condi tion! are favoralilo after the fruits un formed and until and after tliey are ripe, and It lives as a parasite In the hark of apple tree limbs, usually lu localized areas called cankers. It does not occur upon the leaves. The fungus lives over winter in woundlike spots called rankers on the limbs of the apple trees, and from these Infection may start the succeed ing season. Not Infrequently the loca tion of a canker can be made out by the spots beneath It ou the growing fruit caused hy spores washing with rainwater from the former on to the surfaces of the applet). The area of acli Infection lu a well fruited tree frequently takes the form of a cone With Its ancx upward nt or liminnih the limb canker. The water carrying the spores does not descend perpen dicularly because of the interference of the foliage; heuce the wider urea of Infection below. -Illinois Experiment Station. Corn and Emmer. In ome experiments, with two-year-old grade steers It was found that a pound of coru was equal to one uud quarter pounds of emmer. Where the corn and emmer were mixed half tnd half by weight the relation was bout the same, with n small Iw-reiiHo In gain lu favor of the mixture. With hogs It required seven to eight pounds of emmer as against about live pounds of corn to produce a poiiud of gain. Several men lu Umatilla county are rjringing in tine stock for breeding. In a recent address before the New Tork state fruit erowers Henry M Duulap of Illinois gave the following potuts on spraying: No person who exnects to be success ful will undertake to grow an orchard without spraying the trees from the first vear of their nlnnttnfr I hnvo no ticed less dnmflrrp from p.rnRhnnnnrs and other Insects in vnniu? orplinrds planted to corn than where there was no corn. It takes little time to spray young trees,, and one man can drive the team and spray such trees success fully. The leaf skeleronizer which In our section begins Its work In the lat ter part of June, is Derhans the most serious nest of the vonntr tree Snr.iv. Ins at the time the eggs hatch out with six ounces of paris green or Its equiv alent in arsenate or lead to fifty gal lons of water will exterminate this worm. Progressive Methods. Our more progressive crrowera talking of using during the coming spring about the following: Three pounds of blue vitriol, five pounds of liest lime and six ounces of paris green to fifty gallons of water. The applica tion of this spray mixture should be maue at least three times. The first application Is Immediately before the bloom opens and after the fol Intra ft no buds have beguu to show some devel opment. This spraying should be as close in time to the opening of the blos soms as possible, considering the amount of spraying to be done. Hav ing a good area of orchard to cover w lin spray, l sometimes start ten days ahead of the time I think the bloom will be out, and then if there is time 1 go over the part first sprayed the sec ond time, continuing the work of the spraying until the actual opening of the blossoms. In this wnv n rnnaMor. able portion of the orchard gets a dou ble spraying. The second spray is ap plied immediately after the bloom falls, the third about three weeks later. 1 regard the second spraying, the one after the bloom falls, as the most Im portant, all things considered.
