It Is well known that the bitter rot
of apples Is due to a specitio fundus.
This fundus grows on developing ap
pies, beglnnlug at any time during the
cummer or autumn when the condi
tion! are favoralilo after the fruits un
formed and until and after tliey are
ripe, and It lives as a parasite In the
hark of apple tree limbs, usually lu
localized areas called cankers. It does
not occur upon the leaves.
The fungus lives over winter in
woundlike spots called rankers on the
limbs of the apple trees, and from
these Infection may start the succeed

tion of a canker can be made out by
the spots beneath It ou the growing
fruit caused hy spores washing with
rainwater from the former on to the
