latter do not think the course of the
former has been wise. The master
builders say that a 9-hour day
should be granted, but they think
the various unions sbonld withdraw
from the Building Trades Council.
L ondon , May 27.— Tho Morning
Post publishes a dispatch from the
Island of St Lucia, dated May 24,
which says that St Pierre is now
completely covered with lava, and
that it will bedungerous to approach
the place until the covering hardens.
Ash showers and detonations con ­
tinue, says the dispatch. Fori de
France, according to the Post’s cor­
respondent, is safe, but the people
are apprehensive lest the lightniug
flashes shall fire the hundreds of
tons o f explosive stored in tho forts.
The inhabitants are fleeing. Two
hundred of them arrived here yes­
terday and 17,000 of them are on
tho Island of Guadeloupe. Most of
them all destitute.

The Booth Kelly Lumber Co has
acquired control of the Oregon Cen­
tral Military Wagon Road grant.
Originally the grant extended from
Eugene to the eastern border of the
state at a point in Malheur county.
It embraces every alternate section
for three miles on each side of the
road, and includes nearly a million
acres of land.
Jos Smite’ s livery stable stable at
Oakland, Oregon, with all its con­
tents embracing 10 head of horses,
between 12 and 1C vehicles and all
the hay, grain and other contents,
was burned to the ground Saturday
morning. The origin of the fire is
unknown. Fortunately, at the time
the stable was burning there was no
wind blowing else the town might
have experienced a repetition of the
conflagration on the night of July 4,
1899, when this same establishment
was one of the victims of that fire
but as it was no other property was
damaged. The loss is estimate«! *t
$3500 to $5000, with but $1500 in­
surance.
