Schaffer, who has occupied the
position of headmaster at the Bishop
Scott Academy for some time, com­
mitted suicide at his private rooms
in the Academy this forenooon.
' Shaffer had beeu notified of bis
dismissal from the position he held
and this prompted the deed. A
letter to his wife had been written
and left on the table, then he put
the muzzel of a pistol to his mouth
and pulled the trigger. The bullet
passed through the brain. Death
was instantaneous.
In memory of little Halbert Whit­
lock who died March 30th 1902.

Wednesday the political pot was
at boiling point in the Grove. The
County candidates after wadiug
through the mud from Lorane,
pulled in to town along about 10
o'clock and were greeted by a
good sized audience at Martin’s
Hall at 1 ;30 p m. Senator Kuy­
kendall was the first speaker and
spent the greater part of his time
in defending his record and such a
sorrow job he made of it that it is a
notable fact that not a single ap­
plause of any discription was given
him either upon his introduction,
upon any remarks he made or at
the end of his speech.
The Senator is in a sorry plight.
Indeed were it not for Lawyer Har­
ris, one of the most popular young
men in the county, who is relying
upon his own popularity to cary him
through, Mr Kuykendall would not
be in it. But Mr Harris generously
comes to the relief and defends him
as best he can but in so doing over­
shoots the mark for by it he demon­
strates the Senator’s entire infituess
for the position he occupies. It is
a tacit admission that the senator is
not able to defend his own record
and the people so take it.
Mr Shelly makes a very good
talk but occupies the unusual posi­
tion of asking voters to support him
in making a law to protect the
farmers against dishonest mill and
warehouse-men. Mr Shelly himself
is a mill man and bis arguments
and promises fall with but little
effect upon voters.
The people
don’ t like to risk a man who wants
to make a law protecting the public
against his own class of people. Mr
Edmunson of Goshen is a plain
straight forward speaker, and has
not only the ability of pleasing bis
audience but shows also consider­
able legislative ability.
He is
becoming a thorn in Mr Harris’
campaign and shows that Harris has
no copyright on his “ scuttle” argu­
ment The poorest stick of the
whole bunch is Mr Edwards of
Junction, Mr Edwards
knows
nothing but “ prosperity” and the
ancient records of the G O P. He
has nothing to propose but gives
one the impression that whatever
the bosses of the party say and do
will be his guide and that he will
blindly follow their leadership on all
questions.
Mr Castle on the other hand shows
an independence of purpose aud
spirit that Americans cannot help
but admire. No one can hear him
talk without being convinced he will
oppose every graft against the
public treasury and that his heart
is with the masses. He does not
shrink from telling where he stands
on every local question before the
people. Like Edmunson he stands
flat footed against the present
nefarious tax law. He is pro­
nounced in his favor of the three
cent per mile law. He don’ t care
who knows that he stands solid on
the fiat salary proposition and is
against the school book monopoly.
The speakers were all mild in their
arraignment of the opposition party
with the exception of Mr Harris and
Mr Edwards. Mr Harris said some
things that never made him any
friends and indeed were a surprise
to many of his personal friends But
we believe he is getting worked up
a little bit over the outlook and did
not use bis customary caution.
Contract tor Iron Works.
Frank J Miller has returned
from a trip to Southern Oregon,
where he went in the interest of the
Albany Iron Works. This firm has
been awarded the contract for fur­
nishing the iron work for the Bohe­
mia railroad being built from Cottage
Grove to the mines, also the contract
for the irou work for J H McClung’s
new brick building in Eugene. The
Albany Iron Works have gained au
excellent reputation throughout the
Northwest, and are doing an exten­
sive business.—Albany Herald;
