May 11. — Fur ther reports of the destruction of St Pierre by volcanic ereuption show it to have been one of the most dis astrous on seuord, and over 40,000 lives are lost. Only a few survivors have been found in the vicinity. Other islands were also seriously effected. P aris , May 9. — The minister of Marine is in receipt of the following cablegram sent from Fort De France Island of Martinique, last night, by the commander of the French war ship Suchet: “ I have just returned from St Pierre, which was complete ly destroyed by an immense mass of fire which fell on the town about 8 o ’clock this morning. The entire population (about 25,000 souls) is supposed to have perished. I have brought back the few survivors, about 30. All the shipping in the harbor was destroyed by fire. The bill also grants right of way for snch sidetracks, extensions and spurs as may be necessary to reach the various groups of mineB in the resrvation in Lane and Douglas counties. Secretary of State Dunbar has dis bursed to the various counties of the state the sum of $15,113.55, that amount being the 5 per cent fund derived by the sale of public lands within the state for the year ending June 30, 1901. The money is dis bursed to the Counties in proportion to their respective acreage. The apportionment, per acre this year was $.0002470348. Of the entire amount Multnomah county, with one fourth the population of the State, receives the least sum, only $09.90, since it has an area of only 281,920 acres. Lane county having 2,604,160 acres, receives $645.06.
