Connection has keen made with ti e Si P Co’s line about 800 yards south of the depot and track is being laid from that point. Sunday morning a number of cars loaded with rails, tics and bridge timbers were set out on the new track. The bridgo carpenters are busy framing the timbers in tho yard. Tho grading gangs are g et ting along rapidly with the work. The grado has been practically completed from town out to the Mosby Creek bridgo a distance of about 4 miles, and at the rate work is now progressing this end of the road will be ready for rolling stock, soon. According to figures received by The Oregonian up to 2 o ’ clock, June 5th Chamberlain leads Furnish for G overnor b y but 10 votes. I.ct ns do your Job Priutimr-we L ondon , June 2.—Peace has been declared after nearly two years and eight months of a war which tried tho British empire to its uttermost ami wiped the Boers from the list of nations. Tho war 1ms come to an end with Lord Kitchener’s announcement from Pretoria that he, Lord Milner aud the Boer delegates had signed “ terms to surrender,” This announ cement bad been anticipated for strveral days, and it was definitely forcasted in these dispatches, but its receipt Sunday afternoon took the nation b y surprise, as every body had confidently believed that the Honso of Commons would hear the first news today. The edge of the anticipation with which Great Britain awaited the promised state ment in the House of Commons from Mr Balfour, the government loader, was still further dulled by the following message from King Edward to his people, which was issued after midnight: “ The King has received the wel come nows of tho cessation of hostilities in South Africa with infinite satisfaction, nnd His Maj esty trusts that peace may speedily be followed by the restoration of prosperity in his new dominions, and that tho foelings necessarily engen dered by war will give place to earnest co-operation on the part of His Majesty’ s South African sud- jects in promoting the welfaro of their common country.” How greatly King Edward’s insistonco that peace in South Africa bo secured prior to his inaug uration iniluonced the present agreement will probably not bo known uutil the private memoirs of the present regimo arc given to the public. Tlio nows which Great Britian was so anxiously awaiting came characteristically on an entirely pacific and uninteresting Sunday afternoon, when London presents a deserted appearance. I cry late Saturday night a dispatch was re ceived from Lord Kitchener, in which ho said tho Boer delegates wero coming to Pretoria, that they had accepted Great Britian’ s terms and they wero prepared to sign terms of surrender. Mr Brodrick, the War Secretary, personally com municated this incssago to King E<lward, who was at Buckingham Palace. But the government de clined to tnko any chances and nothing concerning the receipt of this message was allowed to leak out. At about 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon the \\ ar Office received the follow ing dispatch from Lord Kitchener, dated Pretoria, Saturday, May 31, 11:15 p m: “ A document concerning terms of surrender was signed here this ovening at 10:30 o'clock by all tho Boers representative, as well as by Lord Milner and myself." A Friend " I suffered from dyspepsia and In digestion for fifteen years,” says W T Sturdevant of Merry Oaks N ••After I Imd tried many doctors aa medicine to no avail one of my friends persuaded mo to try Kodol.
