climate with the prevailing sea breezes,
makes this an ideal place to live as our
summers are not hot, nor are our wint­
ers cold. Thus, we have no sudden
changes, but a comparatively even cli­
mate.
Schools and Churches
T T H K Willamette Valley has long been
* classed with the richest and most fer­
tile districts of the world. While not
generally advertised until recent years,
it was this picturesque territory abound­
ing in wealth and possibilities, that
caused the early settlers of 60 years ago
to brave the hardships and dangers that
were naturally incurred by that long,
and to say the least, hazardous journey
across the plains, mountains and deserts
in order to gain a home in the fairest
and most beautiful section our country
possesses.
Cottage Grove affords excellent edu­
cational advantages. In addition to the
graded schools we have an accredited
High School, the graduates from which
are entitled to entrance into the Univer­
sity of Oregon without examination,
which educational institution is located
at Eugene, 22 miles north of this city.
There are several substantial church
edifices here among which are the Meth­
odist, Presbyterian, Christian, Baptist,
Adventists and Roman Catholic.
While this valley is not Heaven,
neither is it Eden, where all is perfect­
ion, nor is it a land where one can lay
down on flowery beds of ease and live
without work, but we do claim that any
man with a reasonable degree of energy
and scientific knowledge can take up
any one of the many jiossibilities open
here and receive therefrom a larger coin
pensation than he can from a like pos­
sibility elsewhere, other things being
equal, and without the many annoy-
anses that are so preyaletit in so many
other sections.
P oui / tky -This industry is gaining
in importance each year and it is being
demonstrated that poultry rajsing is a
paying proposition in and around Cot­
tage Grove. The price of eggs range
from 15 to 45 cents jier dozen, easily
maintaining an average of 25 cents the
year round. This is considered good
and as feed is reasonable in price, there
is money in tile business if it is properly
attended to.
Poulty shows are held
here annually and the variety and num­
ber of high class birds exhibited would
rank with those of any of the famous
poultry districts.
This valley is about 175 miles long
by 60 miles wide. Situated at the
head of this famous Willamette Valley
in Lane county, 144 miles south of Port­
land, located on the main line of the
Southern Pacific railroad,
on the
Coast Fork of the Willamette river nest­
les the thriving and progressive city of
Cottage Grove. This little city with
its 2500 inhabitants lias made a slow
but steady growth, no boom, simply
growing on its merits. The people of
this little city enjoy most of the con­
veniences found in tpueh larger towns
such as a good electric light and pow­
er system, otic of the best and purest
mountain gravity water systems ill the
state, a paver! business street, a beauti­
ful city park, an excellent sewerage
system and numerous other things all
of great importance to a thriving city.
Cottage Grove's, sanitary conditions
are all that could be desired and we chal­
lenge any one to find a more healthful
climate than we have here. Our even

F a r m in g ---Cottage Grove is admira­
bly situated as a farming center, it be­
ing the natural outlet for the Coast Fork,
Row River, Mosby Creek and I.orane
Valleys and other sections in which are
some of the finest farms to lie found in
Oregon. That we have rich, productive
soil we do not hesitate to say ai\d as to
variety and quality of products, and
the yield per acre, the average here is
as high as in any section of the state.
Diversified farming is carried on here
a great deal with good results. Some of
the profitable products grown here are
grains of all kinds, including most van-
ties of corn, roots such as potatoes, car­
rots, liects, onion* and many others. O11
river bottom land, which is especially
adapted to potato growing, 200 bushels
to the acre is considered a light crop.
Onion raising is another profitable in­
dustry, which is being engaged in here
morq extensively every year. It is liv­
ing demonstrated annually that from
30,000. to 35,000 pounds of onions per
acre can lie grown here and there is
many acres of good onion and truck
land tributary to Cottage Grove.

calities for berry raising.
All of the
many varieties thrive here and yield
abundantly. Some of the most profita­
ble varieties grown
are Gooseber­
ries, Strawberries, Raspberries, Logan­
berries, Blackberries and Currants. The
heavy yields and practically never fail­
ing crops makes this a money making
industry. A new, modern fruit evapor­
ator and cannery just being completed
here assures a first class home market
for all fruits, berries and many kinds of
vegetables grown here.
Fruit raising is rapidly becoming one
of the leading industries of this vicinity
and we are admirably situated for the
growing and marketing of fruits of all
kinds. The shelter from high winds af­
forded bV the surrounding hills and the
infrequency of killing frosts render the
conditions ideal here for#the fruit indus­
try. Some of the choice fruits grown
here profitably are pears, apples, prunes,
peaches, cherries and grapes. Several
large commercial orchards of apples,
pears and prunes are located near Cottage
Grove, and many large young orchard
tracts will soon come into bearing.

Grass Fire On McFarland Butte.
