Joe was yesterday released from durance vile, where he has been sojourning at the request of the circuit judge for the past several m ouths, also being assessed in the sum of $500 ^ eacli 011 two indictm ents for selling •‘Itooze" against the peace and dignity of the State of Oregon. Joe has served out time equivalent to the sum of $400 and yesterday dug down in his jeans and pro duced the further sum of $600 U|K>n the paym ent of w hich Sheriff H arry Itown threw Joe out upon the lender mercies of a foreign com m unity, for the derelict was told that new climes an d new scenery would lie best for his health and th a t Eugene could get along very well w ithout his pres ence within her liorders. Joe took th e hint and today is p ack in g up his lielongings and will hie him self aud family to the state of W ashington, where he will have freer range for his peculiar talents. As a re sult of th is epidemic, the boss boos ters are getting busy au d are sign iug up our public spirited bankers, m erchants, farmers, m iners aud lum berm en in sum s all the way from $5 to $25 per m onth for one Vear in order to produce a $5,000 promotion fund to be used in e x ploiting C ottage G rove an d “ N es m ith co u n ty ’s ” resources, and ad v antages open to homeseekers and investors. H ouston, Francis Saylor, the candidate chosen to succeed the present in cum bent, won out by a large m a jority, th e vote stan d in g as follows: F ran cis Saylor, 74. C. P. Houston, 22. T he county court h as m ade the order granting scholars who have passed the eighth grade e x a m in a tion the privilege of entering the nearest high school in their district under the county high school law. Editor Moorehead of the Ju n e lion City Times, m akes the follow ing frauk statem ent concerning the creation of N esm ith county by popular vote in 1910: “ A good deal of surprise was expressed when the Tim es stated th at the creation of the county of N esm ith would be ratified by the lieople under the referendum law. Now comes the O regonian and says it will support the m easure.
