When diminutive, stuli nosed, red
heuded Colonel Funston brought tlie
Twentieth Kansas regiment to the
Presidio on Its way to the Philip­
pines the San Francisco people poked
fun at the “ country Jakes" and tlielr
colonel.
That was during the Spanish war.
A few years later, when earthquake
and fire had devastated that city, red
headed Fn’ :;uii was the Idol of the
Frisco people.
The doughty little brigadier faced
the most trying situation of his life.
Fully 300.000 |>eople were homeless,
disorganized, many of them distracted.
Thieves preyed. Harpies attacked the
dead licdles. The situation required
more than courage
Poise, keenness,
vigor, were needed.
l-'unston was equal to the emergency.
When lie ordered the soldiers to
shoot ttie looters on sight and to com­
pel Idle and unwilling men to work
at the point o f the bayonet he took a
great risk.
Would the war department support
him?
Yes or no, Funston shut down the lid
of the hell that was lieglnnlng to rage
and sat upon It.
No West Point man would have
dared sueli n thing without consulting
Washington. And that Is where tho
volunteer officer has the advantage—
If, like Funston, he has the brains to
use the opportunity.
They put another officer over Fun­
ston later on when the work was
done. Hut history can never rob the
little brigadier of the supreme hour
when lie saved San Francisco from
Itself.
‘Lucky Funston" they call him In
the army.
And they say he Is a poser. But
how could the gallant red headed Kan­
san help It If the correspondents pic­
tured him as swimming the Ragbag
river with a rope tn hts teeth?
At their worst the correspondents
only slightly exaggerated the real Fun­
ston.

The motto o f the gang Is, “ Eat,
drink nnd be merry, for tomorrow—
who cares for tomorrow?"
The young chaps seemingly go on
the theory that the only way to be
happy Is to make a fool of oneself,
nnd they live up to thetr beliefs.
They tip the waiters at the mid­
night cafes. They pose In luxurious
admiration of themselves. They are
not drunk enough to run tn; they are
just mellowed to astnlnlty.
Somewhere about 8 o'clock in the
morning the young man tumbles Into
bed with Ills clothes on. The alarm
clock falls to wake him at 0:30, and
the maid pounds on the door to tell
him breakfast Is ready.
It Is the cold gray morning o f the
day after. His head feels as I f It
were as big ns a cart wheel. He
drags himself to a fnucet nnd lets the
cold water revive him sufficiently to
get down to the office at 7:30.
No breakfast for him.
There are many errors nnd erasures
in his book. Ills hands tremble; his
stomach Is nauseated; there Is a "seal
brown” taste tn tils month; Ills liver 1»
clogged nnd his vitality lowered.
Will he reform? He will make re­
solves. but his will power will fall to
grip. Next week he will be out again
with the gang. And some day he will
go to the hospital—or the morgue.
