T h e following letter appeared in the last issue of Nobody 's m ag a zine. Dear Sir: In reply to your request for my method of apple culture, I have the honor to state th a t the fact of * ray exceptional smooth and highly colored apples is perhaps due to my lack of culture. My orchard is just coming into bearing, h av ing produced about three partial crops, is situated two miles east of Eugene, on very dark, sandy loam, underlaid with clay, depth of soil an d clay to gravel lied from twelve to sixteen feet, is planted in rect angular squares tw enty-six feet apart (wish they were th irty ), the branches or tops were started about two feet from ground, kept topped back and headed low, alw ays th inning the center and spreading the top. For two years I put one shovel full of wood ashes around every tree, also w ashed body w ith whale-oil soap, cultivated corn and potatoes two years. Since then, like “ T opsey,” they have just grown. 1 turn u n der a growth of fern about three feet high, using a chain side drag, then harrow down and let alone until next winter or early spring, alw ays ploughing when my trees are dorm ant. I alw ays prune in spring an d summ er when there is sufficient sap to heal all wounds. Never let a w ater sprout get more than four inches long: better to rub off as soon as th ay m ake their appearance. T h in the fruit at least twice, using a pair of shot! bladed sheep shears. Better sac rifice one-fourth of a crop for two or three years and perpetuate your trees. A man who uses props in his orchard needs a guardian. I seldom use a saw, but if a limb m ust be removed use a crooked saw, and cut it level with the tru n k ; have my paint brush and pot along and give it a water-proof coat. I expect to cultivate level in early spring, seed to alsike and clover and instead of ploughing, disking an d harrow ing, will simply run a mower over the ground three or four times during the sum m er, leaving all the debris lie on the ground. In my opinion, too m uch cultivation produces poorly colored fruit of thin skin, more subject to scab or rust, and of pool keeping qualities. I challenge the world to produce better shaped or better colored apples of the sam e varieties th an I do by this method.
