WASHINGTON STATE GETS A LOCAL OPTION LAW SIMILAR TO OREGON'S O lym pia, W ash., March f>.— (S p e c ia l.)—W ith six of the striug ent local optiouists still holding out the Senate today concurred in the Mouse am endm ents to the Senate substitute local optiou bill and G overnor H ay announced this afteruoou that he would sign the act. T h is ends the fight over the local option issue, w hich has e x tended throughout the entire ses sion and up until within five days of the end. T o day's action and th a t of the House two days ago, however, clears the atm osphere of m uch of the bitterness that has been engendered by the injection of the issue into nearly every other piece of legislation considered. As in the Mouse both sides of the question got together in a large m easure and the bill is conceded by all but a few, to be effective and as carrying out the pledge of the Republican platform for the enactm ent of a “ reasonable local optiou b ill.” W hile th e S en ate’s action was technically the adoption of a motion to concur in the House am endm ents, it was to most intents an d purposes a vote on an entirely new bill. T he bill approved today retains only the enacting clause of the bill that originally passed the Senate. W ill BUHO I S300.000 POWER P U N I ON 1HE MCKENZIE RIVER COTTAGE GROVE. OREGON. OREGON F A R M E R FIN D S $2000 IN P0 1A T0 PATCH T H E O R EG O N IA N ON UN ITIN G T H E C O L L E G E S Portland, O r., M arch 5.— Rich ard Coruett of M ilwaukie, u n earthed a treasure trove in his po tato patch yesterday th a t is rem in iscent of C aptain Kidd and his 1 -d doubloons of ruddy gold. . ted tin box, packed tightly with gold dust an d nuggets, was turned up by his spade. T h e box weighed about 10 pouuds. Its contents are said to lie worth about 12000 . T h e box was found ju st 22 feet from the end of au old rotted log. T o m ark the spot where the treasure was hidden, 22 spikes had been driven in the log. T h e row of spikes pointed to the place where the box of gold h ad been buried. Old residents of M ilwaukie say the gold was undoubtedly hidden there by an old A ustralian m iner who lived ou the spot 20 years ago. He died without telling the loca tion of the gold. T h e finding of th e box of treas ure followed closely the b irth of a son to the wife of Mr. Cornett, the lucky finder of the buried A ustra lian gold. W ith rapid tran sit betweeu E u gene and Corvallis, such as a j modern electric railroad would supply, there is no good reason j why the S tate University and the A gricultural College should not be united under oue m anagem ent. T he most flagrant errors found so far relate to the gam e code. It is m ade law ful by one section of the cotie to kill elk an d sell the m eat II m onths of the year. For in stance, section 8 is as follows: “ A nd from and after the first day of A ugust, 1909, it will be law ful to h u n t, pursue, t a t t kill, injure or destroy, or have in possession or to sell or offer for sale, barter or ex change any elk or elk m eat at any tim e between the first day of September of each year and the first day of A ugust of the follow iug y e a r." It is presumed th a t “ u nlaw ful” w as m eant instead of “ law ful” iu this instance, but none but the legislature is authorized to m ake a change so im portant. VOL. XX.
