VVednI'.pday, Ji'i v .'1. 1907 The Willamette Valley Develop, inent League Convention held Inst Wednesday was full of interest and in some respects wos perhaps the most successful one ever held here, although to the results of its work heretofore is due largely many good movements that have been in augurated in the state. It is to tbis organization largely that credit is due for the railroad commission. Through it also, Cottage Grove bui become widely known throughout the state, and there -is hardly a newspaper publi-heJ in the state but what h is asisted in advertis ing our towi in a more or less de gree by makiug mention of the pro ceedi igs of the Convention. The resolutions parsed at its late session are of vital importance, not nly to Cottage Grove uud Lane county, but tp the whole state, and if en dorsed and pushed by the various commercial and other influential bodies, will bring about the devel opment of a'l sections of the state that will make prosperity perpetual. The speuses incident to the fu neral of President Garfield has not yet been settled by the Govern ment, owing to a iool and unreason able piece of red tape, requiring a creditor to receipt for 'he money at the time he presents the bill, and before the amount is tendered. It is neither customary, between pri vate individuals, or expected, nor is it a business proposition to give a receipt for money until it is paid over, nor can any sensible argu ment be produced why the custom should be changed when the gov ernment is the debtor. If the bill presented is fouti . to e a correct and just one, the money "honld be tendered and then is the time to re quire a receipt. There is altogeth er too inticli red tape business in dealing with the government in minor matters. ' Another case of premature bur ial nearly occurred last wee.:. A girl at Bird, was struck by light ning, and afier woiking over her a considerable time he wrs finally pronounced dead, und preiarationH made for burial. As she was about to placed in her coffin, a physician present thought she did no-, look hs ft corp&e gen rally looks, and watching intently believed he dis cerned a elight quiver of the eyelid. Applying remedies for resuscitation after several hours work the girl wns revived. i Large delegations will go from Oregon to attend tho Christian En deavor Convention at Seattle, the National Kducationul Association Convention at Io9 Angeles, and the Baptist Young Peoples' Con vention at Spokane, and all should bear in mind that every ticket is good to any railroad point in Ore gon. Judging from advance prei parations being made by the differ ent delegations, they will do a great work in advertising the resources of this State. There is to be a new the immigration service, the Division of Information- It is i to deal with the distribution of int- migrants to the parts of the coun try where they will do the most good for them. This will be good I news to the states of the south an 1 j west if it prove true. The Bureau I of Information is expected to keep in touch with the governors of the several states and with state immi gration officials and even with boards of trade and himilar commer cial bodies. It is to accumulate all the information the immigrant can need in picking out a good locution for himself and family. The con ception ot the scheme is good and it only remains to be seen whether 1 the immigrants can be induced to take advintiige of it or whether it will take some compulsory law to distribute them advantageously over the more thinly .settled sections of the lounliy Roseburg Kexiew. All Oregon i indebted to Mr. A. L Craig, Passenger Traffic Mana ger of the Great Northern Railway j f ,f j,llllitity gl vcn thl.s state in many of the leading papers of the country, including those of New York, St. IxMiia, and other great cities. Mr. Craig feels that that $5000 prize offer of tho Portland Comioerciul Club hhould result in an enormous advertisement lor the State. Good reports are being received from all the fruit sections of Ore gon. The crop is uatisfactory, the the prices are good at the present time and the prospects for the Fall fruit crop are the brightest in the history of the State.
