It goes through that heat-exchanger which transfers it to the pool water and sup- plements those that are getting heated by the boiler,” said Allen. “I.e. we get a 90-degree day, we don’t even need to run the boiler, we can just let the sun do it.” Allen noted that this system will still be working even on days that are not as warm. My relationship with the Cottage Grove communi- ty has only gone up since then. s my graduation from the University of Oregon was looming, I, like all college grads, was searching for a job. Every single journalism professor and all of my classmates just kept talking about how there were no journalism jobs out there. Th ey have withstood my pestering questions even when they didn’t want to talk. Th ey let me come to practice, they welcomed me in. And ultimately, they let me tell their stories as best I could. Com- pletely unaware of the fact that Cottage Grove had a newspaper, I applied for the job and got it. At the start I was a newbie in every sense of the word. Th is was my fi rst full-time job. Th is was my fi rst time being a real journalist. Th is was my fi rst time being in this area for more than just a stop to get gas. I made mistakes and messed up but people across the community – despite there being at least some disdain that I was from Marist – opened their arms and helped me out. It was the woman at the emergency room desk in Cottage Grove that sub- scribed to the paper aft er we had a lovely conversa- tion (I was just in the ER for a bug that got stuck in my ear but that was not the point of this story). It was the group of people that I would always sit by in the North Douglas gym. It was always ending up talking about my niece with a par- ent in Yoncalla. It was peo- ple I was unsure I had met always smiling at me in Elkton. And then there was one time I was in Drain for a soft ball game and as I parked my car I saw that I was low on gas. Th e prob- lem was, I soon realized, I had left my wallet at work. Getting out of this was go- ing to be a team eff ort. So I called my sister. My sister called her fi ancé. My sister’s fi ancé called his brother. My sister’s fi ancé’s brother called his wife. My sister’s fi ancé’s brother’s wife called her friend in Drain. My sister’s fi ancé’s brother’s wife’s friend called her friend who then drove to the game and waved at me from the street with $20 in her hand so that I could get home. Th is story does not feel like an exception but rath- er the rule. In these close- knit towns where everyone truly does know everyone, everyone is willing to help out the outsider who forgot their wallet. So as I head to the next stop in my journalistic journey, I just wanted to thank everyone that has been part of this. I want to thank the paper, my editors, coaches, athletes, the com- munity and, especially, all the readers who have made any and all of this possible. Th ank you, Cottage Grove, Drain, Elkton and Yoncalla. Th e past two years have been quite a ride so thanks for letting a kid from Marist be part of this journey.
