Full forecast on A5 family residential zoning. During the public hearing on the matter, resident Molly Patterson addressed the council representing people who she said were “highly concerned with the school board’s lack of holding agreement to what they told the voters they were go- ing to do and inability to budget efficiently, creating this situation.” The South Lane School District has sought this year to redesignate and rezone the 6.86-acre parcel to help dispose of the surplus proper- ty while addressing housing needs in the city. A 2018 Housing Need Analysis had identified the land as a potential site for multiple-family housing. Patterson expressed her oppo- sition to this change and, noting resident efforts to raise concerns about the rezoning previously at a Planning Commission meeting, she said their voices of disagree- ment seemed to fall on deaf ears. “We all felt like we kind of got blown off by the Planning Com- mission,” Patterson said. “No one from the school board even came to the public hearing. That sent us a really strong message.” Patterson posited that culpabil- ity for promises broken regarding See COUNCIL 11A ‘Chili’ summer day COMMUNITY Crooning to benefit the CG Carousel A3 SPORTS — B Ninth annual triath- lon held at CG Lake B1 PHOTOS BY DAMIEN SHERWOOD/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • RECORDS T he Grove was hot and “chili” over the weekend as chili and classic car enthusiasts gathered to feast their eyes on a collection of custom vehicles — and feast their taste buds on some of the area’s best chili. Box 35, Cottage Grove, OR 97424 After two years of travel and exhibi- tion, the coat worn by Titanic survivor and later Cottage Grove resident Mari- on Wright Woolcott has returned to its roost in the Cottage Grove Museum. Exhibitions at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Ca- lif. and the National Geographic Muse- um in Washington, D.C. featured the coat alongside a blanket used by Wool- cott on her life boat, which is also un- der the Cottage Grove Museum’s care. Through the tour, the coat was pro- vided with new display casing and an information board, which has now be- come part of the Cottage Grove Muse- um’s exhibit, “She Survived the Titanic.” “These are museum-quality items,” said Becky Venice, Cottage Grove Mu- seum board chair. “We would not have the means to buy this kind of stuff.” The exhibit will open to the public on Aug. 10. On April 10 of 1912, Woolcott boarded the Titanic, leaving her home in Yoevil, England to marry her fiancé in Cottage Grove. Five days later, she would be wearing her now iconic wool coat while escaping the sinking ship.
