6A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL JULY 12, 2017 Local sewing circle offers bloomers for BMD "We come here and get together and sew," she said. Their latest project was inspired by a sermon, Steen says. "He was talking about an orphanage in Mexico and when he was done speaking I asked him if there was anything they might need and he said not really but then I asked him about quilts and he said if the children could each have a blanket that was just theirs, that would make a difference," Steen said. So, she started sewing. Steen and her quilting group agreed to do fi ve scrap quilts each. So far, Steen has done 25. "You just get the scraps and I try not to make them too fancy so that the children don't all want the one fancy quilt," she said. The quilts that turn out "too fancy" will be on sale at Bohemia Mining Days and the proceeds will go towards sending the quilts to the orphan- age in Mexico. Each quilt's price varies, as does the price for bloomers. Steen makes children's and women's size bloomers in a variety of patterns and each pair comes with a lace detail at the ankle. "They used to just be white but if you're going to wear them to be seen, they might as well have a nice pattern," she said. "And you can wear them with any blouse, they're really very comfortable." To order a pair of bloomers for the parade, con- tact Steen at (540) 226-2582 or visit the quilters booth during Bohemia Mining Days. Marjorie Steen thinks By Caitlyn May the annual Bloomer Parade cmay@cgsentinel.com hosted by Bohemia Mining Days is ironic. "The only people who would have been seen in public in their bloomers in those days were the local madam and her girls," Steen said. Just the same, every year a few dozen wom- en climb into their bloomers and walk through the city as part of the traditional Bohemia Min- ing Days. Last year, at least six of those women where outfi tted by Steen. Her living room is full of fabric. Fabric for blankets, mermaid tails, quilts and yes, bloomers. Piles of quilts are moved from one chair to anoth- er to make room for visitors and are a reminder of the projects Steen has on her plate. "If someone calls me Thursday, I can still get them bloomers by Friday," she said. She sews fast but promises the comfort isn't compromised. "They used to be called step-ins," she says of the pants we call bloomers today. "In 1912, they were allowed to sew the middle up because before that, doctors said you couldn't have anything be- tween your legs." Steen has been sewing colonial-style garments since 1972. When she moved to Cottage Grove, she joined the local quilting group and now a handful of ladies come together to work on vari- ous projects. While they were meeting at the TLC building downtown, a temporary change has the ladies meeting at Steen's. This is the second year she's provided the garment for those interested in showing off during the bloomer parade hosted by Bohemia Mining Days.
