His appointees to the committee will be selected to ensure they will not consider a sales tax proposal, he said. The goals of the committee would be to stabilize local school funding, have a posi- tive effect on property taxes and work with- in the existing tax system, he said. Sales tax not in plans July 29, 1987 Governor Neil Goldschmidt's plans for increasing state support for public schools do not include a sales tax, the governor said here last week. Goldschmidt discussed school support, the escape of Diane Downs, the Iran-Con- tra affair-which he referred to as a "clown school"--and other issues at a press confer- ence during a visit to Cottage Grove Friday. During the last legislative session, the safety-net plan to prevent school closures and the addition of a $30 million over the next two years for state school support were among the major contributions of his ad- ministration and the legislature in improv- ing school fi nancing, he said. The next step will be the creation of a school fi nance committee to make two or three moderate proposals for aiding school districts, he said. "Where we don't go from here is another sales tax proposal," he said. Golf carts damaged, two arrested July 29, 1987 Two Cottage Grove men were arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a mo- tor vehicle after they allegedly drove and damaged several golf carts at Hidden Valley Golf Course early Saturday morning. Gary Lee McKillop and James Dwight Fix, both 18 were arrested in connection with the incident that caused an estimated $1,100 in damage to fi ve gold carts. POLICE BLOTTER Police received a report early Saturday morning of a theft of a cart from the course. At the scene, police questioned and then ar- rested McKillop. Investigation led to the ar- rest of Fix who was arrested Monday during a car stop. According to police reports, the cars were found at various points on the course with scratches and cracks in their fi berglass bod- ies. The two men were lodged in the Lane County Jail and later released. National Beat News from around the state of Oregon and the nation • Oregon will get yet another extention to issue federally compliant driver's licenses after the state failed to comply with the Real ID Act of 2005. The act was signed by President Geroge Bush after the September 11 attacks and mandates that, without compliant IDs, resi- dents cannot use their driver's licenses to enter federal buildings or board commercial fl ights. Oregon says it is in the process of complying with the law. • 3,200 acres are burning in Central Oregon as of July 10. The wildfi re is burning near Sum- mer Lake and has destroyed two buildings. More than 900 fi refi ghters are working to control the blaze. • The Oregon Legislature ended its 2017 Ses- sion earlier this month with a balanced budget that totaled nearly $21 billion. The suit claims DeVos delayed rules issued by the Obama administra- tion that would have regulated for-proft col- leges that engage in deceptive practices. • Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer in the days leading up to the 2016 presidential election on the promise of obtaining informa- tion on Hillary Clinton. Trump said in a state- ment that he did not know the identity of the individual he was meeting with and his father, then presidential candidate Donald Trump, had no knowledge of the meeting. • Efforts to pass a health care plan continue in the Senate with re-writes happening last week and a vote expected this week. The previous attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) failed after political leaders noted they did not have the votes following sever- al protests surrounding the bills reporteded intention of stripping care from thousands of residents.
