Can we afford for a few dollar of revenue or for any amount of revenue, to give legal sanction to an Institution which is the cause of the majority of murders, the majority of police arrests, which lias put most of the prisoners In the jails? The saloon is responsive for ruuolt of couuty expense as well us for much of the poverty and unliappiness in the homes. The saloon is like the bed-bug. It lives by sucking the blood of those who are much more worthy to live than itself. As good house-keepers work persistently for the extermina tion and prevention of that household pest, let every good citizen work, talk and vote to, banish and persistently bar from our county that parasite on oolaty the saloon. Milking Machine First In County Thomas Morg.in i-ays the milking machine recently installed on his Prairie Creek ranch is a success, and lie is well satisfied with hU Investment. The milker and all its accessories, engine etc., form quite a complicated machine. No expert u as sent to set it up, Mi. Morgan depending cu the us sihtunce of Mr. Hamilton of "Joseph. No one who had ever seen a milker was theie to tttich its operation, yet when the machine was first tried it worked like a charm, and It hasn't balked ouce since the s art. After ou'y a few days use Mr. Morgan with assistance of his wife a part of the time, milked 28 cows in an hour and a half. When a henl becomes well broken, one person oan easily attend to over a hundred cows. It is useless to atteni) t description of the apparatus in all its parts. It mni-t be seen to be redly understood. The suction attachments for teats and the pulsating throb of the milker, so like . hu natural sucking by a calf, are the chief points that has made this milker a success. Mr. Morgan bays he. hud a letter from Dr. Withyconibe, saying it was a success, and also the result of tests at the Kansas experiment station. Speed and economy are the chief ad vantages of the machine over hand milking but are nut the only ones. The milk is cleaner, making it butter f oui a sanitary point of view, and for some reason tne mil it win not sour so quickly. Old cows are much harder to break in but Mr. Morgan's herd, containing a number of old ones, already submit to the milker about as well as a like num ber would to hand milking, while the Jersey heifers are docile from the start. Mr. Morgan is ext ecting in a few weeks a young man from the O. A, C. to run the milker, who has had experi ence with the machine. Electric Lines Develop Country Traveling on the electric line be tween Portland and Salem is rapidly equaling the anticipations of the build ers of the Oregon Electric- company's trolley system, says the Catholic Sent inel. Along the line ne.ir to Portland there Is being established a community of small farmers, who are supplying the city with fruit, vegetables, berries and other produce in ever increasing quantities. Within a comparatively short time the lands available for this class of in dustry will be completely subdivided and the Urge holdings in the hands of individual farmers will be' succeeded by many small orchards, garden: and lierry fields each for a homn for a finiily. Intensive farming is more and more employed by the new owners of these acre tracts.
