Rogers, Bryce, Robb, Gustaf son, Ruthe, Stone, Parker and Daiglay, who took a sixteen mile run Sunday on their bikes on seaside beach, report good sport on the trip, and only one slight accident which resulted In ditching Mr. Oustafson, though that gentleman sus tained no damages except the splashing of plenty of mud on his person and clothes. Mr. B. F. Allen has been fortunate enough to secure the services of Mr. T. E. Schultz, formerly of Portland, and known throughout the northwest as one cf - the' best frescoers in the country Mr. Schultz Is an artist In tils line, having learned his profession under the direction of his father In Europe, and the thor oughness ' of his work can be seen at the Chamber 0' Commerce, the Hazel tine mansion and other noted buildings In Portland. To introduce his work into Astoria and vicinity Mr. Allen will con tract to frescoe a limited number of ceilings from $10 up, according to size. Sunday afternoon Contractor Behm's men were busily engaged blowing out stumps with dynamite on the reservoir site. Gangs of men are at work on both ends of the tunnel, pushing the work rapidly to a finish. At the city end the work Is well In hand, the excavation be ing some seventy-five feet In length, the sides and roof being supported by heavy timbers and cross beams. A tramway has been built and regular mining cars carry the refuse from the tunnel to the dump. With this method the work will proceed with great rapidity. The same method will be used at the south end of the tunnel, and soon the two gangs of workmen will meet in the middle of the tunnel and then the work of arching, and cementing the bottom will commence. Mr. Normlle will have the right of way over the hills cleared in a short time, when Mr. Behm will have large gangs at work digging the ditch. The large camp of graders, with their horses, scrap ers, and wagons, makes an Imposing sight and Is assurance that heavy work Is under way. The thoroutrhly business like manner in which all of the work Is laid out, with the well-equipped black smith shop, powder house, geherad office and private system of water works, shows that a master hand is at the helm. Sunday morning a wandering newsgath- erer found rest and quiet from the world's hurry and strife within the por tals of Grace Church Just as service com menced. The well-trained choir and beautiful service shut out all thoughts ef the grind and rush of the everyday world In its mad race after something, It knows not what, and gftve a quiet hour for the review of the past and a breathing spell, n which to gather up broken threads and ponder on the future. The sublime slm. pllclty of the perfect service mingled with the inspiring hymns and anthems might well tempt any man to pause and oast in his lot with such a life.
