For several days his wife, who accompanied the vessel, was unable to ascertain the cause of his illness, but it soon developed all the symptoms of cancer in the stomach, and It was In the turoes of this terrible malady tnat the unfortunate man breathed his last on Wednesday, four days from this port. Though In great pain for several weoks Captain Otis managed to give the orders for the guidance of the ship, but early In the present month he was forced to give the command Into the hands of his first mate, Mr. T. J. Halcrow, who brought the ship to Astoria, and proved himself fully capable of taKlng charge. Captain Otis, whose home was In Maine, was 70 years of age and had been a sea-going captain for many years. His last voyage to the Pacific was made In 1891, on the American ship Tacoma, from Philadelphia to San Francisco. His loss Is greatly deplored by every sailor aboard the Alameda, and yesterday many of them bore witness to his unfailing kindness and exemplary treatment of them during the voyage. Mrs. Otis Is greatly prostrated, and is hardly In a condition to speak of her husband's sad death. She has accompanied him to sea for a long time. She will take th body to Portland on the vessel, and from there accompany It overland to Bruns wick, Maine, where it will be burled.
