There is said to be considerable ty phoid fever there, and to be none here except what is sent down from Port land. Five of "Washington's thirty-four counties report female school superin tendents. These are Cowlitz, Lincoln, Pacific, Wahkiakum and Yakima. Of the forty-six graded schools in Wash ington, eight are presided over by female principals. Passengers on the 11,'R.Thompson, yesterday, report that about 830, Friday night as the boat was round ing to at Portsmouth to make a land ing, she ran into and sunk a small scow lying at the bank. There was a lively scrambling on board the scow, but the occupants escaped with noth ing more serious than a bad scare and a thorough wetting. The scow sunk. "Look out for this fellow. He's no chicken," is the legend on the lid of a lattice box which went up on the Tel ephone last night with Sam Elmore's compliments to the Portland park commissioners. It contained a seal a year old, named "Jerry." They got "Tom" about ten days ago. "Now they'll have "Tom and Jerry-." What they want to get there now is a male gondola and a female gondola, etc. Mr. R. P. Elmore, who last week celebrated his 74th birthday while riding here from Milwaukee, is a good example of American enterprise and progress. He went to Wisconsin at an early day, when that then territory was a howling wilderness, and is and has been for many years, a foremost citizen of Milwaukee, which boasts its 225,000 inhabitants. He is visiting his son. Mr. Sam'l Elmore, of this city. Where there is no sense there is no feeling; where there is no honor there is no shame; and "Uno" is wasting her time in writing com plaints about him. There is a grand army marching into Oregon, week by week and month by month. Some tarry on the fertile fields of eastern Oregon, others roll down into tho fruitful Willamette valley; others come down here to where the broad ocean leans against the land; but all who are for work and honest thrift will do well. And still from the east and the Mississippi val ley comes tho refrain: We are start ing out for Oregon, 300,000 more." The doctors of Ashland have formed a trust, and make the following re marks: Day visits in city, 82.50; night, 83.50 to 85; consultation, 85; prescriptions, 8L50; obstetrics, and one subsequent visit, 815; obstetrics instrumental, 830 to 850; mileage, SI per mile. Resolved that bills for med ical services be presented within 90 days from cessation of treatment and that interest nt the Tate of ten per cent, per annum be added to bills af ter presentation. Printing is the art preservative of all arts, and a practical printer or newspaper man is always delighted with a view of fine work. The Amer- ican SookmaTier for April is received and is a splendid specimen of elegant printing. The presswork, especially, is superb, though the superior quality of the paper, and tho time and leisure that the workmen can bestow have much to do with it In a daily news paper office such precision and beauty of finish is impossible. Reports from Baker" s bay are to the effect that the traps are thicker than ever. Jack Walker, last week started to put in a trap where there was about 200 feet of drift used by the rill net fishermen of the Aberdeen Packing Co. He was told by B. A. Seaborg that that wouldn't do; that he had to have some place to have his gill net fishermen have some room. The trap still being built, the steamer Volga steamed down and the crew pulled up the spiles. So far, that bit of water toward the Cape is clear. A car load is a good deal. It is ten tons 20.000 pounds. It is-also 70 barrels of salt, or 90 of flour, CO of whiskey, 200 socks of flour, 6 cords of soft wood, 18 to 20 head of cattle, 50 to 60 head of hogs, 90 to 100 head of sheep, 9,000 solid feet of boards, 17,000 feet-of siding, 12,000 feet of flooring, 45,000 shingles, one-half less of liard lumber, tenth less of joist, scantling and other large timbers, 340 bushels of wheat 400 of barley, 400 of corn, 680 of oats, 350 of flax seed,' 360 of apples and 340 of potatoes. The Astobian is in receipt of a let terfrom Tacoma, denying a recent statement in this paper, copied from a reputable source, that Tacoma was tottering on the edge of real estate bankruptcy. Tho letter says such is not the case; that everything is gilt- edged. The AsToniAU is glad of it. If we have none of that spirit that could raise an angel to the skies we are equally destitute of the spirit that would drag a mortal down, and if Ta coma people can build to prosperity on ladders made of honey and chopped straw, why who shall say nay! ' Starting with the word Washington, write down one-hundred words just as they occur to you. Let your second word be the one which Washington naturally suggests to you. Possibly it will be capitoL It may be presi dent Take tho word which first comes into your mind. In the same manner let the third word be sug gested by the second, the fourth by the third, and so on. Be careful that the third word is not suggested by the first and second. Drop the first entirely, and let your mind go from the second alone to the third. King's residence on Thursday evening last to congrat ulate the Harden brothers on their 23rd birthday anniversary. The most remarkable feature of the affair was that no married people were in at tendance. This is a move in the right direction. Give the boys and girls a chance. N. C. Mudge has built a fine bath house for the city hotel. Our hotels are doing a fine business this spring. Baker's bay is shoaling up. The A. P. Co. raised a largo 42 star flag on inauguration day Mar. 4, last. i .- m The Sad Plight of Deacon Smith. Deacon Smith seated himself in a headless nail keg in Pete Krauss' saloon last Sunday, not knowing that nails were driven through the edges; the deacon being very lean, planted himself unusually deep in the keg, and in trying to extricate himself, the nails were ".run into his flesh.
