nr w She gaily $tian. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY ATOIL 21.1889. OUE PORTLAND LETTEE. Mrs. Ben Hoiladay's Will Probated. .Tiio. Dronillard Heads Xot Guilty. Poktlant), April 20. This morning at eight o'clock GusJJentin, a long shoreman -forking on the steamer Jlichiyan which was discharging her cargo at the dock between Oak and Pine streets was knocked down an open hatchway by a bale of goods which was being hoisted up from the hold by steam power. Ho was picked np in a dazed condition and carried upon the deck while a physician was summoned. Dr. Kej es made a super ficial examination of the man's in juries, which he found to consist of a very painful contusion over the right eye and a very severe sprain of the right shoulder. The man fell clear to the bottom of the" vessel and struck squarely upon his head and shoulders. Except for the fact that he is a young giant in strength Benton would most certainly have been killed by the force of the blow. By the phy sician's order the injured man was re moved to the Good Samaritan hospital where his wounds were dressed and another examination made. It is thought that no bones are broken but it is feared that concussion "of the brain may have been sustained. THE HOLLADAY ESTATE. Late yesterday afternoon the will of Mrs. Ben Holladay was admitted to probate in the county court and at 4 o'clock this afternoon general Bufus Iugalls was to have qualified as exe cutor. Tho hearing of petitions for the guardianship of Linda and Ben Holladay will come up before judge Catlin Tuesday morning. cnxE coxa's case. This afternoon counsel for Ohoo Gong, tho Chinese murderer sen tenced to be strung up on the 17th of May, finished his bill of exceptions, after inanj delays, and it will be pre sented to jndgo Stearns on Monday morning next. Chee Gong has twice been sentenced to death and it seems that an appeal to tho supreme court will not bear much good fruit for the condemned man. TO EQUALIZE MATTERS. At 12 o'clock to-night, twelve tellers who began their labors on Monday last, talljing traffic over the Morrison street bridge and Stark street ferry will have completed their taskj and next week the county commissioners will figure on the rate of toll that shall be just between the corporations and tho people of East Portland. A PLEA OP NOT GUILTY. In the United States district court this morning. Tohn Dronillard indicted for murdering Pedro Biberos, on tho high seas on board the steamship Corona, was arraigned to plead. He entered a plea of not guilty, and was then taken back to the murderers' cell in the county jail. A EAT OP HOPE. As To The '"Danmark's" Passengers. General Bonlansor Will Leave Belgium. Brussels April 20. Boulanger has decided to leave for London on Wednesday. A POSSIBLE CIIAXCE. New York, April 20. A represent ative of Tnnohe, Edy & Co., said this morning that the Minnesota had picked up ono of the Danmark's boats and it is surmised that the pas sengers have been rescued. Other wise, ho said, where would the boats be? It is a natural question. If they pensned, uie ueau bodies would re main in ihe boat, for it is not probable that they would jump overboard as long as it continued afloat Broken cigar boxes indicated that occupants had placed their valuables in them when leaving the ship and when they were being rescued had broken up the boxes 1:1 their hurry. If tho passengers had been rescued and brought to tho Azores wo will hear from them by the end of the week. A TOUCH EXPEEnrWE Purcell, LT., April 20. Many Ok lahoma settlers aro particularly with out money to buy food, and every day men, women and children aro found begging in the streets. All they have left is their weapons. They have held on to thoso through all adversities. They believe that six-shooters wil im prove more Oklahoma soil than a plow lor a month or two to come. A largo ma jority of tho men hero belong to tho original Payno boomers. Nino out of every ten of them have not only lo cated their claims, but have poled and staked them off. They believo now these claims belong to them, and when the lime comes they will fight for them. THE JIOSEEi DIED. A correspondent ot the East Ore gonian has the following interest ing description of Mr. W. S. Ladd : Speaking of Ladd, reminds me of passing that gentleman's residence the other evening just as tho old man was entering. His carriage halted in the rear of his residence. A body servant, who site beside the driver, alighted, assisted his charge to the ground and placed a pair of crutches under hia arms. Slowly the old crip ple dragged himself around to the front steps of his mansion. Every move seemed to cause him paiu. His face gave unmistakable signs of suf fering. When he finally reached the foot of the steps leading ,to the front doors, the servant brought him a wooden frame resembling a contriv ance sometimes used to teach babies to walk. This was put over his head and the ascent "was made by placing the frame on th6 steps and crawling up while his body was supported by the arms, the frame being raised as each step was reached. When at the top his crutches were again handed to him. the great double doors swunff upon their hinges, and the old million aire disappeared. I stood there in front of that beautiful place and com menced to think and usay to myself, says I:" "That man i3 worth millions of money and I am a poor eor-of-a-gun. There's my faithful, hard working little wife at home, toasting herself over the kitchen stove prepar ing our frugal dinner: there are three chubby little urchins with her and we are all poor. For their sakes, how I would like to be rich. How 1 would dress them, how I would feed them, how happy I would mako thenar' Then I thought in another direction and I saya to myself: "Well, Mr. Ladd, you may have your great nnilCtAO llfirl carronfa nnrl noiFiorraa you may have jour great acres and herds; you may have your notes and mortgages ana stocks and bonds; you may have your tons of gold and silver. Td rather be myself just as I am, sound of mind and body and limb, with six bits in my pockets, than to have all your vast wealth and be com pelled to take with it your poor old, paralyzed, worthless legs."
