"Tale3 of Many Cities; or, Confes
sions of a Bohemian," is the title of
an interesting series of articles now
running in the Tacoma Globe, from
the facile nen of W. L. Visselmr.
Though slightly inaccurate as to dates
they are cleverly and pleasantly writ
ten, and will find a place in a good
many newspaper men s scrap books.

"Look out for this fellow. He's no
chicken," is the legend on the lid of a
lattice box which went up on the Tel

compliments to the Portland park
commissioners. It contained a seal a
year old, named "Jerry." They got
"Tom" about ten days ago. "Now
they'll have "Tom and Jerry-." What
they want to get there now is a male
gondola and a female gondola, etc.
Mr. R. P. Elmore, who last week
celebrated his 74th birthday while
riding here from Milwaukee, is a good
example of American enterprise and
progress. He went to Wisconsin at

has been for many years, a foremost
citizen of Milwaukee, which boasts its
225,000 inhabitants. He is visiting

There is a grand army marching
into Oregon, week by week and month
by month. Some tarry on the fertile
fields of eastern Oregon, others roll
down into tho fruitful Willamette
valley; others come down here to
where the broad ocean leans against
the land; but all who are for work and
honest thrift will do well. And still
from the east and the Mississippi val
ley comes tho refrain: We are start
ing out for Oregon, 300,000 more."

Printing is the art preservative of
all arts, and a practical printer or
newspaper man is always delighted
with a view of fine work. The Amer-
ican SookmaTier for April is received
and is a splendid specimen of elegant
printing. The presswork, especially,
is superb, though the superior quality
of the paper, and tho time and leisure
that the workmen can bestow have
much to do with it In a daily news
paper office such precision and beauty
of finish is impossible.
Reports from Baker" s bay are to the
effect that the traps are thicker than
ever. Jack Walker, last week started
to put in a trap where there was about
200 feet of drift used by the rill net
fishermen of the Aberdeen Packing
Co. He was told by B. A. Seaborg
that that wouldn't do; that he had to
have some place to have his gill net
fishermen have some room. The trap
still being built, the steamer Volga
steamed down and the crew pulled
up the spiles. So far, that bit of water
toward the Cape is clear.

The Astobian is in receipt of a let
terfrom Tacoma, denying a recent
statement in this paper, copied from a
reputable source, that Tacoma was
tottering on the edge of real estate
bankruptcy. Tho letter says such is
not the case; that everything is gilt-
edged. The AsToniAU is glad of it.
If we have none of that spirit that
could raise an angel to the skies we
are equally destitute of the spirit that
would drag a mortal down, and if Ta

on ladders made of honey and chopped
straw, why who shall say nay!

Starting with the word Washington,
write down one-hundred words just
as they occur to you. Let your second
word be the one which Washington
naturally suggests to you. Possibly
it will be capitoL It may be presi
dent Take tho word which first
comes into your mind. In the same
manner let the third word be sug
gested by the second, the fourth by
the third, and so on. Be careful that
the third word is not suggested by
the first and second. Drop the first
entirely, and let your mind go from
the second alone to the third. Hav
ing written this list of words, you will
have furnished yourself with a cheap,
but very useful mirror of your mind.
